Expected turnaround time for Paint during peak summer period

To the bodyshop folks,

What is the expected turnaround time for paint & repair on motorcycle fairings and tank? Granted it's peak season and people tend to be alot busier, so generally speaking, how long can a customer expect for work to be finished? The reason I ask is because I had taken in fairings and tank repair back in late April, and was under the assumption that it would be done AT MOST in a month and a half. It's now mid July and i've only seen some progress. Is 3 months way too long even during peak periods, or is this the nature of the business?

I would take back the parts and find a professional. Anyone who take over three months is not professional.

Wayyy too long. Did they give you any time frame? I could see if it was a buddy doing you a favour but if it's a shop and you are paying for it that is unacceptable. In high school I had my mustang painted in a weekend, using the paint booth overnight.

I would take it elsewhere.

Nope. This is a shop and i'm paying for it.

And that's the other thing. I've asked for a TENTATIVE timeline but he wouldn't give me one at all, due to experiences from the past. So i'm kind of going by "It's done when it's done" principle. Also, keep in mind that the shop is a bodyshop/service shop, so it has other projects other than bodywork. So with that said, an almost 3 months time frame does seem quite long, but i've been patient thinking this is the nature of the biz!

A professional shop would do the overtime it takes to get caught up, 3 months is bullsh-t. At this point, they should do it now, and not charge you at all.

I was gonna suggest you ask Carboncat

Did you pm carboncat?

lator-illa's bike is already at the shop and has been there for nearly 3 months, and close to being done (i'm sure). pm-ing carboncat won't speed up the process, unless he is a lawyer, even though everyone vouches for him.

i think he just wants some more info on reasons why the paint/work being done is taking so long. and how he can go to the current shop and ask them to speed up the process.

He wants to talk to someone "in the business". That's Carboncat...

go to the shop and yell at the friggen owner, and find out why the heck it takes 3 plus months to paint a motorbike, christ it's not a transport truck or an airplane

ohhhh and do post the name of this place, I'd like to make sure I stay away from them, even if they offered the painting for free.....

why we said to ask carboncat, is cause he would only be able to tell him it's not normal to have a bike in for 3 months and not get it done.....my son needed his car done carboncat would have done it and finished in 2 days, but there was a week wait time, now that is more normal.......not 3 friggen months, last time I had my tins done by carboncat it was 10 days and that was with an emergency flight to Nfld or Nova Scotia, one of those places,,,,by carboncat....

PM "Cheekeebandito"

I know he is swamped with work, but hands down one of the best guys around for paint work here.

Also does plastic welding too.

If the job isnt completed, go pick it all up and bring it elsewhere.

This.

The bike has been in the shop for quite some time, and most of the work is complete (prep, wheels pcoated, etc). It won't do me much good by e-mailing other painters (regardless how good they are), as i've already started with this guy.

I just need to know if this sort of turnaround time during this time of year is sort of the baseline(due to the amount of work), and wanted to hear from bodyshop guys (rather than customer's expectations).

The only reason I didn't go with TJ is because he is quite far from me. Logistically, it didn't work out for me, and the shop where it's at right now was alot more convenient. But I can attest to the guy working on my bike. He does good work, and i've seen alot of the stuff he's done and it's top notch. I just was not expecting this, and i'm not gonne lie and say I don't have any regrets.

ok weve established its been a long time .. now what?

Post up the name of the shop?
Tell the guy your going to start taking $100 off every week ?
Report him to the BBB?

My intentions of posting was not to defame his shop, so i'm not about to do that now.

I'm not sure if I can start saying $100 off every week, as he didn't explicitly say when it would be done. He did warn me that he was getting busy, so I expected delays. Did I expect a delay of up to 3 months? No. But how can I threaten to take off from the quoted price when he didn't say a firm date, or ETA even. I guess this would be partly my fault for taking it in after knowing this fact.

That said, I guess I can't really do anything but wait until he's finished (as he is nearly done). I hope the work turns out great and the wait will be worth it. This has been a lesson for sure...a painful one at that.
