I need Pallet Wood, lot's of it.

Hello all,

Last time I posted in here I was looking for a local welding/fabrication shop. I ended up finding one through a member on here and never looked back, we now do alot of work together.

So my next conundrum, I have a little business where I make small items of furniture from reclaimed materials, usually pallet wood: www.sonofawoodcutter.ca. Trouble is I never have enough material, I source a little here and there and then and it's back to square one. I have a couple of guys in the city (pallet manufacturers/re-conditioners) who spare me a little when they can, but this hard winter didn't help. I need a regular supply of pallet wood, I currently pay $0.50c per piece of wood at the moment, I then process it myself. I don't currently have the space to process and strip the pallets myself and this would render my product unprofitable anyway. I believe that 50c per piece of old scrap pallet wood is good money, I thought I would have people queuing up with material for me. If I put an add up on Kjiji I get 10's of people 'applying for the job' and sending me pictures at the back of an old warehouse saying "its all yours, come get it!"

Most pallets are 40" wide and by the time I trim them straight they are 39" which is too small, so I need 42"+ so I can trim them down to 40". The best places I have found are hot tub manufacturers as the pallets are huge and easy to strip down, some piano ones are the same too.

So does anybody have any smart ideas? I would literally drive to Halifax for a truckload if anybody knew of a place I could buy from. And if anybody knows anybody looking for some extra cash, that can source it from whereever and bring it to me to process, but remember that I don't need whole pallets just the slats.

Can anybody help? Any suggestions?

I'm assuming you've checked out Craigslist in the free section. Also try machinery importers although imports are getting tougher to find due to bugs in the wood. Many are using plastic pallets to avoid quarantine.

Oh boy you're in luck.

Emco, 33 pippin road, concord. They are a bathroom fixture distributor. On the side of the building is a mountain of long pallets they are throwing out. Twice a year they rent a bin and toss it out. Have at it!!

Odd that they waste money renting a bin, those things are heavy and most disposal places charge by weight. There are a few guys out there that gladly pick up pallets for free.

Time is money

I have access to hundreds of pallets per month.
I will measure them this am and get back to you.

They are large pallets, not the normal universal sizes. Seeing the things they throw out, I'm not surprised they spent the $$ on bins.

I'm sure someone on here will know the place, but there's an industrial-looking building driving north up the 400, maybe on the east side,(I have baaad memory) between Innisfil and King that also has a mountain of pallets stacked up. Probably at least 20 pallets high.

I always think to myself, would make one hell of a bonfire.. I'll keep an eye out on my random rides.

There is a marble/granite place at langstaff and Edgeley in Concord as well. Tons of free ones there.

Wow, a ton of info and leads. I have a meeting tomorrow morning with a refurbisher, I'll get to my PC tomorrow and follow up with you all. Awesome, a great start!

Endless thank you's!

My pallets don't meet your requirement but does anyone have some specific contact for removal? I've tried all the ones on Kijiji they never show up. I have about 15 to go right now finch and the 400 area.

I'm way up north is the cottage country of Barrie! If you need, P3/P4 skids which will measure up I have lots. We toss them out back and gone in a couple of days. If needed, I can easily hold them here and you can pick them up. Let me know!

is pallet wood safe for indoor use? Is it treated with anything or just bare wood suitable for campfire cooking?

pallet wood is just bare wood, a variety of crappy hardwood species that is not suitable for any other job. they are often heat treated since you cant export wood to other countries (ash bore beetle ect.) without heat treating. The downside of skids for campfire cooking is you have no idea what toxic crap was on the floor where the skid sat. How many times it was reused and at what location and with what product it came in contact. Great firewood but I don't think i'd grill a steak over it.

Once I have processed it is perfectly safe, chemically treated pallets are banned in Canada anyway so you can always look for the HT (heat treated). But yes, you don't know what has been spilled on them. As long as you dont sand down and start licking one of my products you'll be just fine lol :)

This would be wonderful but Barrie is a little far for me, I know its only 45 mins away but it just wouldnt be worth it for me. Thanks a bunch though!

Awesome, I will definitely be hitting up this spot next time I'm short, it sounds just what I was looking for.

Cheers!
