Is this a good deal? ('09 650r $4500)

For checking for drops im going to check the exaust, fairings, handlebars, levers, side mirrors, side forks, side everything....

man buying my first bike is nerve wracking :( anyone in the west end free tonight to tag along?
Dude, just relax - you are going to be fine. Yes, first bike buying is nerve racking - just calm down, take your time, bring your checklist if it helps you to stay focused. Good idea to bring someone with you (even just a friend whi does not know anyhting about bikes). Bring small flashlight too - handy to check bike out

Got a flash light ready :D checklist is long as hell with a whole questionnaire.

Its kind of a sketchy bike its 09' with less than 10k/km on the odo...seems to only have been ridden for one season, any special stuff I should look for on a bike thats been barely ridden?

I won't call it sketchy - low mileage, that's it. Read up on the bike before you go, know what was the prescribed maintenance and ask seller lots of questions. Feel with your gut if he is telling the truth about oil changes, chain lubing, etc. All these small things matters and you'll likely know rght away if the bike was taken care of. Honestly unless it was completely abused and/or lemon - not much wrong should be on 3 years old Japanese bike with less then 10K on it.

This guy said he bought it from a dealer second hand and he wasn't that technical with the bike, when I asked about mods he could barely name the mods he had to describe them and I guessed the names, not anything big but eh...

ex.

He said the thing to know what gear you're in, i said gear indicator?
then he said the coloured strip on the rim and also the thing on the side so if you drop the bike it will hit the thing not the side of the bike

i asked if he meant the frame sliders and he said yes, which concerns me a bit :T what if he dropped it, it landed on the sliders and he just changed the sliders? Could anything be damaged if it ONLY landed on the sliders? Im checking everything else on the bike for marks so...

Are you sure you are capable of checking the bike yourself? Nothing wrong with admitting that you are not there yet and just use some hired help. As for the guy not sounding too confident about what was done to the bike - can be to advantage of knowledgeable person (possibly knocking down the price even more if seller does not know dick about bikes) or could be "sketchy" as you call it.

I lowsided my bike last year - now after all repairs and new parts you won't be able to tell it was dropped, not a single scratch (aside from fairings which I was too lazy to touch up and they are designed to protect the bike after all). If I ever decide to sell it - I'd be very upfront about it but from what I see majority of sellers are not (it is always a minor drop on the grass or previous owner dropped it)

Actually I do feel a bit 'un' capable, asked if anyone was in the west end of toronto in a thread i think but didn't get a pm, got a pm with one person who said they could help me but not tonight and all my bike friends are out of town.

I think I can tell if something obvious has been done to the bike, drops, damage, tires, etc. but I won't be able to tell any major things like suspension problems, brakes, exaust, internal, internal mods, bike tweaking, etc. if that makes sense.

Being a beginner I don't want to ask to test ride because if I drop it I think hell is going to break loose...not only that I don't know the bike so stuff like the controls will be new to me (obviously its not completely different but some stuff like headlights, turn signals, choke) and minor stuff might throw me off on a run around the block.

Don't think i'd go as far as hiring someone to come with me but I was going to give anyone who came along $100

The guy knocked the price down a lot already and he sounds like a stand up guy don't want to rape the price but if I find something wrong I'll definitely renegotiate the price.

So why not call bike places around the area and see if one of the mechanics would come out and check the bike for $100? or even pay a bit more but at least you will sleep well after purchase :-)

Thought about it but its too much of a hassle, no bike guys going to do it last minute already asked a handful of shops, anyways im leaving now haha. Most people tell me you have to bring it in which makes it 100x more complicated since you have to move the bike, other half of the people tell me they're closed or booked.

wish me luck D:

Well, good luck and post pics. When I said call shops - I would not talk to service manager but would actually drop by and arrange private deal with mechanic, gotta be easy 100-150 bucks for them.

Dude stop being so damn paranoid if it looks good get it. No one is going to switch parts on a ninja 650 either. Basic bike with low miles either buy it or don't. If you are this scared of a low mileage used bile go buy a new one.

I bought a 2007 Ninja 650R for $4250 last July. The bike was damaged in some way. I didn't realize it when I went to go look at it. I was so focused on just buying a new bike at a great price. I suggest you take someone with you. Even if its just to talk about what you notice. Then they can talk you out of it if you spot something that you are uneasy about.

P.S - How dare you call my 2007 model ugly! :P

Does anyone believe that this 17 yr old, got a quote for insuring a Ninja 650 for $250 a month ?. Ninja 250r quote he got was $1500 a year at 17 years old. I don't know boys and girls.
Sounds too good to be true. I wonder if this is Royal Flush making a comeback.

Dunno but he told me the same thing via PM. It was over $400/mo when I started on it in the Guelph area.
