Bike stolen today :( Insurance claim question

I spoke with security and asked for them to contact the owner of the bike chained next to mine, so that he may have a chance to save his bike in case someone comes back. They refused to help me, and said that they cannot do that because they don't want to create "concern" within the building! According to the officer, it's the second bike gone from here. Nice of the building to warn us!

It infuriates me to think of the crazy maintenance fees that continue to go up year after year. Not to mention the MF parking tickets they hand out daily to our guests! Security sure is on top of that!

Thanks again for the tips!

That's BS, but then what can you do. Personally, I'd leave a note taped to the seat of the CBR if the condo won't contact them. I know I'd appreciate that, as likely you would have, had the owner of the first stolen bike taped one to yours.

Also, even though it might go nowhere, I'd definitely bring this up to the management office -- as you said, you pay condo fees, and security shouldn't be allowed to dictate what causes concern and what doesn't. In fact, if management has no issues posting a notice I'd let them know security seemed against it, even after telling you yours was the second bike, and that you worry this potentially was an inside job to some degree (if that's the feeling you genuinely got form them).

You got it! That's where it was taken from.

Thanks again to everyone for the advice! I will be using it.

Everyone is so supportive! I miss gtam!

Mannn, no way. That area has been gang bagged for the past week or two. They have been two utility trailer thefts that I know of with thousands of dollars in tools and now that you mention, two bike thefts. This really makes me think that this is bigger than some average bike thiefs and the cops are not doing **** about patrolling that neighborhood. Did you see the video from camera ? What time was it stolen ?
Police reports were filed for those utility trailer thefts.

This is really discusting and sad....

can you install a discreet GPS tracker on a bike? If I lived in a condo and had a SS I would have one for sure.

I hate to hit a man while he's down but with all these bikes stolen in condos, why do people get such nice bikes & park it in a condo?

I'm guessing because they want to have a nice bike and they happen to live in a condo! I used to live in a condo and I have a nice bike. That's also why we have insurance.

So if out of the blue for the next few years a bunch of bikes got stolen from houses would that mean that everyone on a house should sell their nice bikes?

Bikes get stolen from Malls, does that mean that no one should ever go to a mall on a bike?

What about movie theatres?

Bikes also get stolen from the street, does that mean you should never go to work on your bike, or stop to buy something, or to visit a friend?

Where does it stop?

..and you are hitting a men while he is down and I don't think you are sorry about it! I think you are trolling.

It sucks to lose your bike, so why don't you run along, nothing to see here

My next door neighbor got his r6 stolen from his garage when I used to live in that area like 6-8 years ago (near New Westminister & Clark.... Wonder if its the same people..

Sorry to hear that bro, I hope the insurance company will get your money to you fast so that you can get another bike, damn that really sucks!

Condo+nice bike= theft , thats why i dont have a nice bike , i dont think anyone would take my ****** 250 from my condo parking . its just not worth it when there is a 2011 r6 to take it. wonder whats the other bike they left.

Nobody said you can't have a nice bike. There are options out there. Storing it at a buddy's place or storing it at a storage facility.

The majority of people who claim they have their bike stolen, happen in a condo. Go figure! Its a matter of percentage. If you live in a condo and can't get that, then good luck. Its hard to feel sorry for you.

If you can link me a post where someone post that their bike is stolen at a Mall, I'm all ears.
I've parked my bike at malls all the time. In fact, I used to work at a Mall and left it out there for 8-9hrs

Bikes are super easy to steal...

I'm living in a condo and I'm considering geting a ducati monster 796 to replace my CBR 250.

Any suggestions on how to prevent theft?

Please no ridiculous suggestions (eg. move somewhere else...)

Make your bike look like its not worth the trouble compared to the ones you're parking around - and insurance.

There are many things you can do to make your bike look less attractive to steal, but none of them will really prevent it.

I parked a nice new sportbike in condo basement parking for a few years with no problems. It probably helped that I bought a big-*** industrial size chain and chained the bike to a support column beside my parking spot. I even cut up some bicycle tubes so that the chain wouldn't mark the bike wheel. Combine that with an expensive lock for the chain and a xena alarm disc brake lock and bike cover. There ya go.

And this one of course happens to be underground which seems to be the common occurance for thefts anyways.

I bought a non running car from someone in a Condo. I pulled into the lot with a uhaul trailer and winch, dragged the car up onto it and out of there before security even cared. A bike is 10X easier...

I am sorry for your loss...

Condo Theft Solution: Buy an old POS astrovan or something tint the windows and park your bike inside that...nobody gonna steal an astrovan! Most condo's force you to pay for a parking spot anyway...park a big POS there big enough to park your bike in. Thinking about it 90's astrovan would cost less than a real high quality chain.....

That's a good idea but instead buy one of those big white vans. You can probably get a non running one for $500. Get the owner to drop it off.
You can store your bike and other items in the van. remove all the seats etc... Then later you can sell the van to w wrecker who will come and tow it for you for free. That is probably the best solution. Add an alarm to the van and you are good to go.

Or buy a white van that is running and start pulling what I call "The R1timmayyyy Move"

Just thought I would post an update here for all those condo owners.
There aren't actually any surprises here though, but the cameras picked up the 2 guys jacking my bike and putting it in a (what appears to be) grey GMC Safari. They took about 5 minutes to do it (surprisingly longer than I thought!)

The police got the truck on about 10 cameras but non could they get the plates from. The officer was very disappointed and said people need to make sure that condos they move into have GOOD cameras, at least at the entrance and exits. It's foolish to think they could cheap out that much.

The condo we have isn't cheap, and isn't very old! I think you guys might be shocked at how horrible security really is in some of these modern buildings! This condo is located in Thornhill around Centre St/Bathurst. There have been many bikes stolen this year in the area already.

Sad part is, thieves could be monitoring this thread. They probably know now that they're not gonna be caught or police ain't gonna do shat, so they might as well go on a shopping spree.
