Forgot to pay a ticket; suspension

I just got a notice in the mail about my license being suspended. I thought I paid a ticket but it didn't go through. I just paid it now and I have to go to pay the reinstatement fee tomorrow. I didn't worry about it because you used to just pay your fees when renewing your license.

I don't care about the money, but just wondering how this will affect insurance? Does it even matter?

It does affect your insurance!! It happened to me!!! I got it suspended for not paying a $50 speeding fine (10 km/h over) which I stupidly did not go to fight (my first mistake). They gave me 60 days to pay and I forgot all about it, then I received the notice by mail I was suspended.

When I wanted to change insurance companies all the new ones asked me if my licence had ever been suspended, I told them "yes" but only for non-payment of a fine and they told me "It doesn't matter sir, there's no distinction why, only if it has been suspended" and its now on my record. I had to stay with my own insurance company until my record clears.

What a retard this government is allowing private corporations to penalize us for stupid little things like this.

Once the ticket is paid the suspension doesn't show up on your abstract so I would say no... The insurance company has no way of finding the suspension in this case (unless they pull the abstract while it's under suspension)

Are you sure about this? The lady from the Union Local 183 insurance told me it does apply and stays on your record, I hope God you are right.

In my youth this happened twice to me and it did not affect my insurance. When they asked me about it and I told them, they informed that was fine because it wasn't suspended as a penalty for a conviction. I know in the most technical sense it was, but it was suspended for non payment, not because of a ticket.

Just a quick correction... Now that you've told them about it I think you are screwed... Had you not said anything you would have been fine...

I forgot to pay a ticket a few years back and pulled my Driver's abstract both before and after I paid the ticket... And there was clearly nothing on it afterwards (other than the original ticket). I typically pull my abstract when changing insurers as it's good to know what you're going in with so there are no surprises. It's like getting a copy of your credit report, it's good to know what's on it. Pretty cheap too (about $15 I think)

I'm with State Farm and very happy with them (27, M2; they were by far the cheapest). So as long as I don't change it'll be okay?

I used to be thankful that people were covered with a good minimum level of insurance. But potentially being penalized thousands of dollars over an administrative error makes me wish for a more American-style insurance market.

That's good since I didn't inform them. I thought about calling in and asking but quickly realized how that could be disasterous, haha.

Wrong. The suspension will show on the abstract for 3 years, no question.

But was your licence actually suspended prior to you paying the ticket? Many jurisdictions and the MTO have become more rigid in suspending licences for non-payment in the last few years.

But my case if different. I got a ticket for going 12 km/h over the limit and was given a $50 ticket. I then didn't showed up at court or implied what I was going to do, I was convicted of the ticket in absentia and just forgot about it till I came home months later and saw my suspended licence notice.

Now will this suspension show up in my abstract? I don't want to tell insurance companies about this if I don't have to.

Go in and tell them you were busy devicing an alarm system for your bike. They'll let you off.

Happened to me, I went paid the fines and it was never an issue with insurance, even when insuring my new bike.

Actually, your situation is exactly the same as his; you both didn't pay your tickets. You weren't convicted in absentia, you were deemed not to dispute as you didn't make any other intention known. Then your licence was suspended for not paying the fine.

Where you MAY be different is that the other poster MAY have gotten lucky and they hadn't gotten around to suspending him yet whereas they DID suspend yours.

Yes, it will show up in your abstract.

So because I received both tickets at the same time and paid one of them (where the other one didn't go through) the court said they'd likely remove the suspension from my record and put in a request for a refund of the $150 (which I may or may not get).

I say likely because I went downtown and they told me to go to the one at Eglinton instead.

One thing they recommended: pay your tickets in person to ensure they get payment. And keep the receipt.

Contrary to popular belief these suspensions do not shaow on an absract and are not allowed to be used in rating your insurance.

I know for a fact that they show on your record for 3 years. I can't say for sure if they'll show on a printed abstract but can't see why they won't.

As for suspensions not affecting your insurance, I can't say. But then getting a ticket for forgetting your insurance card at home isn't supposed to affect your insurance but it certainly did for a friend of mine.

Okay guys so which one is it, will it show on my abstract or not? Will it affect my insurance or not? I find it retarded that insurance companies can get away with jacking your rates up for something totally unrelated to how you drive, like getting a licence suspended for not paying a fine.
