Tractor trailer pursuit live in Toronto

So if I get this straight, people here are saying the OPP should have taken a peaceful situation and escalated it? Started shooting at the truck American style? Maybe get him to start ramming police cars or other vehicles in response? Why, because they make lots of money and society wants violence and instant gratification? Seems to be what I am reading. BTW there are rules for discharging a weapon...

If the guy started to be an actual danger (or showed any signs of being) they would have stepped it up, but why be the first to escalate it? Hell he was even using his signals. He did run a red light, I guess that is a shooting offense these days, sucks to be many of the people here on the board that have run reds...

Turning this "chase" into a shootout would put more families at risk than waiting him out.

If you cant hit a 4x4 foot area from 20 meters you need to hang up your badge and work at the mall as a security guard.

you'd be surprised, plus they gotta be doing this from a moving vehicle (since this was mostly on the highway, standing out there ahead of time might be tricky, and it's not like you may get multiple tries...moving targets require "A LOT" of practice...and if you are moving too, well, that just multiplies the complexity to it...you'd be surprised what 4x4 looks like at 20-30ft at 100km/hr...

You're directly in front of the truck how hard can it be? The truck wasnt changing lanes like a maniac

I agree shooting at the thing should have been their last resort, but to do nothing was just as ridiculous

yeah, i don't think their training has "shooting from moving vehicle to immobilize another", especially a truck...as for doing nothing, i think they went a little over the top with the procession of police vehicles, the highway is three lanes wide, that's 6-7 layers deep...if it was just a few police cars, probably wouldn't have gotten the attention that it now does...flashy lights and sirens are sort of media magnets, of the worst kind...

I didnt want any instant gratification, but when my taxes pay these guys 80-100k a year i expect them to stop someone from potentially killing me, or any members of my family. At the exact time this guy was going on the qew i knew my sister was using the exact same highway to get home with her 5 year old kid...now having driven a tractor trailer for 7 years and seeing these things wreck more times then id like to recall what do you think was going through my mind?

These guys endangered 100s of people by their lack of action...
If they're so scared for their life all they had to do was park a couple of cars up ahead of the truck, leave the sirens on and tuck their tails between their legs and go jump across the cement barrier, or hide behind a bridge.
Very good chance this guy would have stopped if he had the choice to ram cop cars, chase would have been over. But no lets just sit back here and get on the news and tell people, "This is not a chase"

What about if the dude decided that was his plan somewhere along the way?? Busiest roads in the country...

There was no chance of that happening, i mean he was using his signals. Oh wait, he stole a truck and refused to stop for police...

Alright, then what's your suggestion? Short of shooting at it, what could they have done? And please take into account the safety of other vehicles on the road.

Police pursuits are called off everyday. The only ones you here about are ones where someone is injured. I don't hear Dohhh complaining about all of those where the bad guy got away who most of the time did far worse then stealing a semi...

I already mentioned above, make a road block. Try a spike strip, you have 5 hours to figure it out lol

Right, and how is that going to affect traffic? What do you do with the rest of the commuters? And a spike strip? Please tell me I don't have to explain the risks of that one.

The truck was obviously not high risk enough to use any extreme measures. Making 80-100K a year doesn't automatically turn cops into freakin' superheroes. They utilized a measured response to the situation, and had a favourable result. Must we *always* ***** about the police?

You cant possibly be serious lol
How is it gonna affect traffic? The exact same way it did when after 5 hours he finally stopped, they closed down the highway, arrested him and towed the truck of the road.
How do some of you get dressed in the morning? lmao

haha they never had a plan to begin with, they just decided ya we're gonna keep following until he runs out of fuel or crashes...we'll pick up the pieces later. fortunately it worked out, but like i said it could have ended horribly. a fully tanked up rig like that could have done in excess of 3000km lol
