I rode on a tire that was cords half way around the tire from Peterborough to Orangeville. Then I did a burnout which took the rubber on the good half and melted it over the cords. Good to go.
Not smart, but I had no other way to get there to change the tire. Once you take the tire off you realize how thin the cords are lol.
I slide the rear wheel by giving it gas. That's backing it in, not letting go of the gas. Letting go of the throttle is not riding hard, it's the opposite. What you are describing is the set-up to a big high side and an awesome way of upsetting your suspension. I hope it never gets to that point for you.
Seems to me that you aren't big on riding at the track, as in never had the last time I heard, and it isn't the sort of thing you want to try on the highly variable surface of the street, where it would in fact likely result in eating the weeds.

Because you seemed to be saying that it was a necessity and given that Paul is a significantly faster rider than you, and I don't recall him ever talking about 'backing it in' at The Gap, that throws the whole 'necessity' thing right out the window. You aren't going fast enough to 'need to.'

Actually you did, back in post 71, and I have ridden with you, at least a couple of times.
If you're riding slower than someone who doesn't need to steer the rear, in the same circumstances, then either you don't need to do it or your lines suck, so you don't need to do it if you improve them.
