Anyone here box?

Just wondering if anyone is an amateur boxer and what gym they go to. I wanted to get into it a long time ago but I just didn't have the time or money. Now I have more time and money and I'm getting fat so I'd like to get started now.

There are a couple of gyms I'm considering.

1 - Closest to me is Fight Scholar (VP/Lawrence). They charge $140/month.
2 - Cabbagetown Boxing (Carlton/Parliament). Not sure how much per month.
3 - Atlas Boxing Club (Oakwood/St Clair). I heard they charge $50/month.

If anyone would recommend their gym and give some information on getting started in boxing, that would be appreciated.

I fought as an Amateur for about 15 years when I was younger, out of McGrory's in Hamilton. I'm doing Amateur Muay Thai now.

You won't regret ANY kind of training of this type,

Atlas and Cabbagetown are both great clubs, I'm not familiar with Fight Scholar.

A few years ago I joined a couple MMA gyms, looking to mainly get in shape.

Unfortunitly with UFC being so popular I found alot of MMA gyms were full of testosterone pumped guys looking to hurt rather than train or learn.

We were doing light contact sparring one day when we rotated and I was up against this HUGE guy. He repetedly struck at me with full strength punches. Put his shoulder into them and everything. Next roatation he broke a kids nose.
 he showed no remorse.

I hope Boxing gyms would be populated with more disciplined people.

They're both part of Boxing Canada correct?

I hope we don't have those in boxing gyms. And with me being Asian(Filipino), I hope I don't get the 'Manny Pacquiao' wanna-be stereotype.

No thanks. That's for people who have vaginas. Haha

I was at HUF in Mississauga for a while.. but I mostly did my own thing as I was sparring and training outside of the gym at the same time.

The gym was grungy but the coaches and owners were super nice, and religious. They kept the place disciplined well enough. Boxing attracts certain types of hot-shots but it doesn't have to affect you.

If you're just doing it for fitness, do boxing at a regular gym.. it will serve that purpose fine.

Cabbage town has been around FOREVER! Great gym and great trainers. No nonesense and a very mature crowd you're not gonna get a hot head trying to knock you out when its just a sparring match.

I'm doing it for fitness and to compete. It's probably too late for me (20 years young) but I still wanna give it a shot.

Can anyone confirm the price for Cabbagetown? I want to see what's worth it.

Far distance, cheap membership? vs close distance, expensive membership.

I know both of these places and I used to train with Atlas at their old gym. Their new one is a bit smaller than the old one but it's still prob 5 times bigger than Cabbage town. I suggest you go into both and smell them before you decide. Also an thing to consider is the neighborhoods and what time you will be exiting the gym...

Any boxing dedicated gym will be good to learn and get started. I've noticed that you get treated like family at a club, completely different then going to a gym.

Isn't there Florida Jacks on Yonge St too?
