I'm a new rider and I've just purchased a used 2008 Honda Rebel 250cc from a dealership which is offering a 1yr guarantee only on the motor. They want $400 for this. I know nothing about bikes, but this doesn't sound like it's worth it to me. Please advise! :)

Im no expert in this matter but from what I've heard:

1/ if your bike design generation hasn't changed for a while, then most likely the manufacturer has worked out all the little kinks that would fail within the first year. If they made an "all new" rebel this year, then there is a higher chance than Honda hasn't worked out all of the kinks and thus a warranty is a good idea.

2/ The manufacturer has to make money, always. So buying a warranty will always net profit to the manufacturer. Thus buying a warranty, more often than not, goes unused.

Someone else pls chime in here.

Warranty is a good piece of mind on the other hand.

In the end it's your call!

If she's buying a used bike, which I think she is or else she would have a full warranty for x amount of time. She is not paying the manufacturer anything, it is most likely an aftermarket warranty that benefits the dealer only and the customer if there is a claim to be made.
Personally, I wouldn't bother with a warranty and I would put that 400$ towards accessories/gear/etc...
But if you want the peace of mind, then the warranty is always a good idea. Your call no matter which way you look at it.
Good Luck!

Ok, he is actually a she, ;) and my main concern was that the warranty offered by the dealership on the used bike only covers the motor.

Good value for a bike of that value would be 400 for a full coverage mileage limited warranty. In my opinion 400 for a motor only warranty is WAY too much.

There's your proof but I'm also probably old enough to be your Mother! lol (Go finish your homework!)

LOL! way to be a team player! Your too young to be my mom....unless your a teen mom.

I wouldn't pay $400 for an engine warranty. How many Km's are on the bike and would the $400 make or break the deal?

The bike has almost 9000 km and I've already made the deal. They said I could add this in if I wished. Getting bike on Sat.

What's an OP delivery?

means that when someone asked you to do something for ex; pics...and you showed the pics, you delivered.

Congrats on the new bike :) feel free to PM or join our nightly fun group rides once you feel comfortable with your bike....

As an overall rule warranties aren't worth it. As was said, they are a pretty good profit source for retailers. But then different people have different tolerances for mechnical breakdowns. Depending on how mechanically inclined you are, how dependent you are on the bike, and how much a potential repair bill makes you fret, the warranty may be worth it to you for the peace of mind alone.

For that year and model though, it's hard to imagine what could possibly go wrong with the engine within the next year.

And no, you couldn't be my mom.

Lol. What, is this a dating site now? I'm a mother and over 40! (Gasp!) Just between you and me, of course! ;)

With 9k on the engine I wouldn't bother with the warranty. Once in a blue moon though it does pay off. I'd still not buy it, but that's me. Course, I buy private and not from dealers anyways.

Someone just had an issue with a used bike from GPBikes... the used engine warranty was used.

Oh, and you aren't olde enough....

How much is the bike worth? A $400 warranty on a $3000 bike doesn't sound right to me.

I don't ever buy warranties, never needed them either! Buy some gear, it's getting cold out lol..
