Where's Wingboy?

Wow. What a ride. From Nanaimo to Tofino is only 200km, but it's a really big physical workout. Huge elevation changes and hundreds of switchbacks. Love it! Incinerator Rock is unreal. The beach is huge. Up to my ankles in the Pacific ocean just because. Cathedral trail Forest is like a scene from Avatar. Huge trees and rainforest.

My buddy in South Carolina says I'm turning into Forrest Gump. Is that bad?

I'm simultaneously happy you had a blast and deeply jealous. Next stop: Japan! (Or south to California, I guess, but Japan would be a heck of a surprise...)

Don't be jealous of my journey. It was (and still is) a tragedy that put me into this. I'm getting better at dealing with it i think.
Don't know why. But i have the urge to point the Yamaha in the direction of Utah.
I dunno.

The answer is simple, Utah it is.

Utah is as good a destination as any! If I could attempt to talk you out of blasting down I84 into a minor detour, eastern Oregon is one of the most underrated motorcycle destinations anywhere. Nobody listens when I tell them that, and it's mostly ignored because it's not usually on the way anywhere either side, but believe me, it's incredible.

Unlike Washington state, the Oregon DOT spends big money on their roads, and it shows. The eastern 2/3rds of the state is far removed from the lush coastal stereotype. Very dry, a bit scrubby, feels very Western. It's also nearly empty, so you get the incredible roads mostly to yourself (Unlike Portland, which has some of the most aggressive drivers I've experienced anywhere.) The Painted Hills have some great roads nearby, and some incredible scenery. On the off chance I've actually sold you, here's a decent article that'll give you some idea of what I'm talking about:

Should you end up heading south, a great way to get to the US is via the Black Ball ferry from Victoria to Port Angeles, though be cautious about getting anywhere near Seattle at rush hour. Their traffic rivals Toronto. Really cool city, though. The Boeing air museum is incredible.

PS - Getting better at dealing with loss is a lifetime journey, I think. First year is the hardest, or so I've been told. I believe you're going about it a good way. Something about the meditative state of riding that simultaneously means you can't hide from yourself but also keeps the new coming in a way that encourages perspective.

On our way back from Vancouver to Toronto we took the US route.
Went into Utah and even dipped our toes into Colorado since the state border was right there and up through Chicago to see my friends family.

Awesome scenery in Utah, even just from the main highways.

Well said. When my Dad passed in the summer of 2020, and after years of being the most involved family member with his care, I took a 30 days trip across the country to clear my head. It wasn't easy at first, but the moto travel perspective really helped.

Every day can't be great i guess. Started fine. Got the oil changed and my helmet visor fixed. Bought a Tilley hat for fishing tomorrow and some anti seasick stuff. Sat on a beach in Nanaimo and just felt miserable. I'm in a great hotel in Ucluelet. Better times ahead.

My hotel tonite. It's a small world. My server at the restaurant tonite in Ucluelet was a girl that worked at the grocery store i shop at in Waterloo. Weird.

This weird f'd up day won't end. Had dinner tonite at a nice place and immediately the waitress and i made a connection. I knew that i had seen her before. She said that she is from kW, but we couldn't draw a conclusive point. She asked for my name and later hooked up on fb. Messaged me hours later and told me that her Mom is friends with people my wife worked with.
It's a small world.

Ended up in Whistler tonite. Been off the grid all day yesterday with my 2nd cousin Chris over at Ucluelet fishing for salmon and trapping shrimp. Mmmmmm. The sea to sky highway was breathtaking. I'll take pics on the way back down where there are pullouts. The time spent with Chris was like a bucket list day.
And the picture of the young lady in the fisheries boat? I didn't think it would be cool to show her face while she was writing Chris a ticket. But she was really cute!

Forgot to mention a bit of the fun we had fishing. We had a bald eagle try to steal our salmon at the boat launch. I turned my back for 2 seconds and when i stood up it swooped in and missed the fish and my head by a couple of ft. Scared the poop out of me. But was very exciting too.

They are really big birds. I did a boat tour with some friends up in Prince Rupert and there was this island with a few of them. Very impressive.

I remember when I first moved to BC, we went up to Goldstream Park on Vancouver Island just outside Victoria during salmon spawning season, as the bald eagles congregate and get fat on all the giant salmon that expire after doing their genetic duty. I was so excited to see one, never having seen one before. We get up there, and hey look, there's a bald eagle! And another! And another! Holy crap, look at all the bald eagles. Within about 20 minutes the novelty had worn off, as there were so many eagles that it looked like seagulls at the dump. Every tree had four or five lazy eagles, sleeping off their feasts.

I think seeing one alone is much cooler, even if they do try to steal your catch.

Speaking of seagulls, they have to set up tents on Granville Island in Vancouver to protect the tourists with food in their hands from the marauding gulls, who will snatch anything with zero fear. The gulls there are huge, too, way bigger than Ontario gulls, so it can be terrifying to be a target...

Best and worst ride of my journey so far. From Whistler to Shuswap lake (again) the mountains were nothing short of spectacular. Met a young man at a picture stop who took my pic and me his. He and his young family have just emigrated from Kurdistan. I congratulated him and he looked very surprised. I told that it was wonderful of him to choose Canada and get to know it in the Rockies. He shook my hand again, so i hugged him. Her said that my greeting was better than the one given by the government. I said that's because I'm not getting paid to do it. We laughed.
Next picture stop the gravel looked the same as usual, but it was about 6 inches deep. Crash boom! Bike is fine, I'm fine. Just a sore wrist but that's because of the osteo. Crashguard and sidecase scratched up. No biggee. About 6 cars drove past just looking at me. Guy in a pickup finally pulled in to help me lift it. Getting old. Lol.

Glad you're ok. It's nice to let adv bikes have a nap now and again. Too many pavement princesses.
