Where to buy EBC brake pads

I'm used to riding things until they blow up (I grew up in a small town in NL where NOTHING worked right.) I tend to ignore a lot of things that need to be done. I just keep rebuilding every winter (or spring, for skidoos/other winter toys.) or when it stops working. I'm actually surprised my motorcycle is still running. Thing thing has been pushed through hell and back multiple times. Apart from the brake pads and tranny slipping (it's been like that since I bought it.but it only slips if I do hard acceleration, so I'm just keeping it down until I set in a new tranny during winter storage) it's excellent!

That and engine braking. I rarely use the actual brakes, only in emergency stops or to shave off the last 10km before a stop. And I find it better to use the rear for that.

dude. please do everyone a favour and get your brakes fixed. from what you describe, that's no way to ride around.

if you're really trying to use the same rotor, see if you can have it machined flat. I'm pretty sure trying to do it with hand tools will not work out optimally.

for reference, i have 70,000km on my bike and have never replaced a rotor due to wear.


Edit: just saw the pic of the rotor. i'd say it looks like it's toast. if you have a micrometer, see if it's still in spec's, but i doubt it.

Hard to say exactly, but feels like the middle is depressed 3-5mm.
But it's depressed on both sides. The other side not as much. 1-2mm.
Yikes, that's pretty thin!!!

I'd say new rotors, new pads, full caliper clean (pistons)/service/lube the slide pins, brake fluid flush and replace with some good synthetic, etc.

Were you using the EBC HH pads before?? I would like to recommend a much much better pad to you, the Vesrah RJL. Much more initial bite, works WAY better than EBC HH when cold, super linear progressive response.

I usually buy my Vesrah from http://www.kurveygirl.com/shop/ but I didn't see the GS500 listed for the pads they keep in stock.

no, i mean the full on brake service. not just pads. get that caliper fixed. get a new rotor.

....it's been running on no pad (and partly-seized pistons) for a long time. It doesn't look pretty.

It's incredible to think you've been running it like this for any length of time.

Well, yeah. Getting pads is just the first part. When I switch them out, I'll be cleaning the caliper, and making sure I have a working; safe rotor. along with a fluid change.
I might put off doing stuff, but when I do get around to doing things, I make sure it's done right. No half-assing.
So if grinding it will bring it out of safe spec, I'll be getting a new rotor.

I'm not to concerned with how long they last. I only want to know that they work well in the rain, work well when cold, and give me predictable bite every time I pull the lever.

On that note, I would assume they'd last a similar amount of time to the EBC HH's.

Ah.

From what I can find, it does not look like the RJL pads are made for my VFR :( EBC HH it is for me.

I was looking for the SRJL 17 pads for my 07 R1. They are made for pretty much EVERY bike EXCEPT the 07 and 08 R1 :( So I know how you feel!

But I'm loving the RJL's anyway. On the track, I can squeeze the front brake as hard as my internal organs will allow, and she preforms perfectly every time :)

Try T.O. Cycle on Lakeshore and Browns Line. I got my EBC pads from them. Got them that day and Installed them within the hour.
 
Dude, if you're so cheap, go to ebay and buy a used rotor from some parted bike. At least it will be safer than completely worn out one.

Putting new pads on that rotor would be flushing money down the toilet.
Did you not read the part about me going to attempt to machine the rotor, and if that doesn't work get a new one?

I'm actually looking at a parts bike right now, just waiting for the owner to reply. Apparently the bike has 80km on it, and then it got stolen so its a recovery theft.

Because GS500 is the easiest bike to take care of?
It's easy to take care of, and it's also bulletproof!

Don't get me wrong, I do actually take care of the bike. Lubing and adjust (if needed) the chain every 500-750km. Oil+filter change every 3-5000 depending on what type of oil I last used. Checking fluid levels. and other regular maintenance.

There are just a few things I tend to put off until very late. If I would of known how bad the brakes were awhile ago, I would of most likely changed them. But it was still working relatively fine (still is) and I've just now gotten around to looking at them. If something happens that seems like its a serious problem, I instantly try to fix it. I also haven't been riding it that much the past few months.

This is my first road bike, so I'm still going through the process of learning whats important, and needs to be done/etc.
There's a reason I bought used, because I knew the bike would be ran into the ground. It's a bike to learn on, and push the limits to see how far it can go.
And now I know what happens if you don't change out brake pads when they get worn out!

True, it's dangerous. I wouldn't go so far as to say its a major safety hazard, but I would never recommend anyone run their bike in the condition mine is in.

I would, however, run it myself. I'm used to riding broken things, and know what to expect/how to deal with a situation where something goes wrong because of it. Considering most others don't have that experience, I'd recommend they keep their bike in tip-top shape.
Some would call me a f**king idiot; and they have every right to. I understand the consequences that can arise from my actions, and still choose to do it. If anything does happen, I would blame no one but myself.

I seriously don't understand you. That front brake (yes, single caliper front brake) is the only thing that's really stopping your bike - not rear brake, not engine braking. You're putting yourself in danger for a few bucks. And the other thing is - if you change brake pads on time, you don't need to change rotor, but if you go metal to metal, your rotor is pretty much done. My first bike was GS500F and I loved everything about that bike, but carbs (just hate to adjust those things).

I haven't had a problem stopping at all.

I never had to change brake pads before, so I didn't exactly know when the right time to change them was. Or the effects of running metalxmetal, and now I know.

I do agree though, carbs are annoying.
