What's with the numbers?

So I was riding on the Hockley Road yesterday, and coming the other way was a group of about 25 bikes of various types, all of them sporting large numbers on their fairings or headlights. They also had a couple of guys with safety vests and letters rather than numbers, leading and trailing with their flashers going. Humorously one of the pack just fell over sideways at the Hwy 10 light. So any ideas, explanations of what this was? Are people paying guys to lead them around on "rides"? Have we fallen this far?

possibly a training course? I did the one at humber college many years ago for M2 exit and we rode in group of about 20 with multiple leaders. Didn't have numbers on us, but sounds similar

That was the "Forget Me Not" touring club for old folks. They count the numbers from time to time, in case they've forgotten somebody.

MUCH FUNNIER than that @sshole with the drinking and driving REAREND issue. Nice ;)

It was a women's only BMW ride. We started at the Best Western in Orangeville. It was a very good day! I had heard someone went down. Not quite sure what's humorous about that :(

And, even if people choose to pay someone to lead them around on rides, so what???

OK, no need to get bent about the comment. He said it was at a stop light, implying the rider was stopped. I'm sure everyone's seen something like that - it's a face palm moment, which, is kind of humorous...

Not "bent" at all. We all find different things humorous. Now, I would find a rider getting a ticket for speeding/stunting humorous. Like you said, "face palm moment" :)

You have somehow come into Shinigami Eyes and the numbers were the riders' remaining years of life

Nothing wrong with that.
Seems the person that went down is okay, so all in good fun.
Nobody has answered the question about the numbers, though.

Glad to hear the person is okay. The numbers, as far as I could tell, were simply to identify the motorcycles. The person's name would be called, and she was told which number bike she would be riding.

So the riders didn't own the bikes? That makes more sense.
Thanks for the clarification.
I actually think more women would ride if they offered more things like this. I wonder if they have a ladies only training course? I know that they did a special half day (full day?) course for some mommy bloggers the day before the last show.

You're welcome. No, the riders didn't own the bikes. I test rode the BMW 650 scooter and REALLY liked it. So glad I went to the event. Great opportunity to try out different bikes.

Okay that explains the numbers and the "group" thing. Maybe it's just me but if you can't stop at a light on a bit of an uphill you have no business being on the road. You are just one "my bad" from being dead or taking one of your buddies with you. Having raced for many years, and spent a few days and nights in the emergency room because others screwed up, people need to understand that if you are not paying complete attention bad things happen. So how do we get one of these paying to ride gigs?

I truly do not know the circumstances of what happened. I only heard that someone's bike went over. People screw up; even the most experienced of riders. That is a fact. Bad things are going to happen. That is also a fact.

As for your question. Not quite sure what you are asking. This event was simply a demo ride, but for women only.
