Hey i'm looking to buy my first motorcycle and i'm really liking the '06 suzuki sv 650 naked. I saw one with some nice add on but it has like 17k miles on it. Looks to be in great condition but can anyone give some advice & let me know if that milage is very high of if it's ok. Pls help!!!!

A certain moderator on this board (not me) has a V-Strom (same engine) with over 200,000 km on it. Next ...

17K? If that bike was well maintened its barely broken in! I've got 24,000KMS on my 9 and its running better then brand new. Maintenance is the key!

My SV650 engine had 120,000 km on it until I swapped it for another one. I ran low on oil (my own fault) and killed the bottom end. I have no doubt that the engine could easily get above 200,000 had I been more attentive.

as a buyer, the bike has too many miles and the price is too high.
as a seller, the bike is low mileage and well maintained and will last forever.

Sounds like that bike has only seen warm sunny days with that kind of mileage. That's less than 3000km a season (6yrs/17,000). I do 3000km in a month.

Yea my rr i sold with just over 17,000 K.. It gets tough to sell high KM bikes however 17k is not high; i know mine was always maintained and worked like it was day 1 all the time. 17,k is nothing especially if it hasn't swapped hands too often. I personally would watch out for Bikes that get bought and sold every season it usually means the riders aren't maintaining them because they know they won't keep it.

17k is decent, for 1 season. Fret not my red haired friend, this bike should be in almost new condition if maintained by somebody who isn't a total moron.

my '06 suzuki sv 650 has 22k miles on it. so relative to mine, the one you're looking at is low.

I sold my R6 at 25,000 Miles or there abouts. I purchased my RF600 and that had 45,000 and the engine was still sound.
It all depends on the miles your going to do as well. I didn't have any big rides planned for the RF. It was just a weekend toy.

However on the R6 I had ridden it to Morocco and put 15,000 on it within the year.

I personally wouldn't have any queries with buying an 06 SV with 17,000 if it's been properly maintained.

Still not clear if 17K miles or km - not a big deal if bike was properly taken care off but if it is miles then can help with price negotiating

17,000 km is not high by any stretch. 17,000 miles is a slightly different story but still not that high imo. I think the general perception of "high mileage" is somewhat skewed in Ontario because of our short riding season. In any place where the weather's mild year round I doubt this question would be asked over 17K.

That said, it's relative to what you can find out there and, as others have mentioned, it's more about maintenance/usage history which you can't be certain about. For that matter, you can't even be certain of the odometer since it's so easy to disconnect them on bikes.

Many bikes including Sportbikes do not start to loosen up nicely until approx 10,000 kms.
I would consider 80,000 - 100,00 kms as high(er) mileage if it has been properly maintained and not abused which can be told usually by looking at it, for an experienced rider.

Anything past the break in period is high mileage.

People scrap most bikes as soon as they hit 10,000 kms

I was referring to miles. If it's KM's on the bike in question then I would consider that to be low for a 06 bike.

Not sure what the Canadian average mileage / km's is but in the UK it's around 3000 miles per year.
Though I did 4500 in around 12 days riding to Marrakesh and back in 09 :D

Horribly high mileage. The bike will literally fall to pieces the first bump you hit and explode into flames.

I had 33,000KM on my old Ninja 250, that I bought in Aug 2010. That's a bike that lives it's life above 8000 RPM day in day out. With proper maintenance it ran like a top.
