We Know you Ride, But do you Shoot?

Well, my "Haven't pulled a trigger for 50+ years" record has come to an end with a bang.

A late Father's Day present from my daughter had me firing the four-inch deck gun on the HMCS Haida in Hamilton Harbour.

Thanks to it being a low charge blank, the Burlington Sailing and Boating Club sustained no direct hits. However, there might have been a bit more seagull poop at the time of discharge.

The presentation was very interesting, covering the history of the ship as well and the intricacies of the mechanisms.

Flew out to Sask. a couple of weeks ago to help save the canola..

Did our best eliminating several hundred gophers over 4.5 days of shooting

I had a chat with someone that recently had a chance to experience Griffith Island. Sounds amazing. 2300 acres and max 22 shooters. Private chef to cook what you killed. Trap courses in the woods. Becoming a member there makes a normal gun club waiting list look instant. Very limited memberships available (~100) and you need to wait for someone to die or relinquish to try to move up the list.

It’s an amazing place , they don’t talk about it much and getting an invitation is not the easiest thing . Tamahack club or Caledon trout club are easy by comparison. But skeet shooting is not a priority at either of those clubs .

That’s not awful , cheaper than a Krieghoff or Kemma. DTII is a very well made gun , you can break targets with a Stevens you bought for a hundred bucks , you just can’t break two hundred thousand of them .

^^Truth...
I'll those high end guns are nice, but... I'd be so scared of dinging it up lol.
I'll stick to middle of the road guns. A $3500 Beretta field gun is more than adequate.
The duck/goose hunters I know who shoot clays use their hunting pumps/semis for trap and they do just fine.

If you are spending tens of thousands on a gun for your hobby, a ding shouldn't be a big deal financially.

Dings hurt a small bit financially but hurt a lot emotionally. If you get a custom stock or just a high end gun you feel very bad when the piano finish gets hit with a piece of flying clay target . My custom stocked Browning has many whacks from broken clay , doesn’t really change the value by thousands , but you want them to be shiny and nice .

The only real problem, if it’s even that , is shooting trap or skeet with field and duck guns is they are usually too light . They are built to wander around the bush or haul into a blind . Trap guns are sometimes pounds heavier so you don’t get beat up shooting a hundred birds in a day . They work fine , just will never work as well .

Can you make a weighted stock to allow conversion between field gun and range gun? It shouldn't be too hard to get a few pounds of lead shot into a stock. Balance when shouldering the gun may be weird but once it's up I wouldn't think it would be a big issue.

That gun above has barrel weights too I think.

I’m not much into guns, but if I was I’d want the one Lucas McCain uses.
