Warning. OPP Bait and switch tactics on the 401

Was I complaining?
I'm just warning people???
I was happy to be following a cop at those speeds. I played it smart and stayed out of his crosshairs, and still got to speed like hell.

So let me get this straight you were following behind an OPP Cruiser in the rain doing between 130km - 150km/hr from Brockville to Kingston and didn't get pulled over and you are complaining? Common sense just isnt so common these days.

I went on a trip (in my car) to Ottawa this weekend.
I saw a lot of OPP stationary radar points. No big change.

But coming home, it was raining, and I guess they did not want to, or could not have stationary radar units.
So they had un-marked, black SUV's running up and down the 401 trying to get people to pass them so they can pace them and get them for speeding.

I came up to such an unmarked OPP unit. He was trying to get people to pass him by employing many different sneaky plays.

First he would run in the fast lane with cars in the slow lane. He was at about 130 to 140 kph.
Then when there was a point when there were no cars in the slow lane, he would boost the speeds up to close to 150.
At wich point he would slow down and pull to the slow lanes, waiting for people to pass him.

When nobody passed him, he tried a different way.
He would get up over 140 and slow down a few times for no reason. Still in the fast lane, with cars beside in the slow lane.
This time he would get to a point where there were no cars in the slow lane, and get the speeds up close to 150.
Then when we came up to slow cars in the slow lane, he would slow down at the end of the slow cars and wait for all the followers to pass him.

He was really pissing me off.
I tired to get some people to fall for his stupidity, Just to get rid of him.

Finally when the 401 opened up to 3 lanes in Kingston, some idiot came on at high speeds and crossed very close in front of him when he entered the fast lane.

This cop was trying to catch a fish all the way from Brockville.

I saw many more of the same things going on all the way home.

So keep an eye out for un-marked SUV OPP's.

Sounds like a complaint to me. It's ok I know this site is pretty much anti LEO.

Pretty well everywhere these days is, if you haven't noticed.

Thanks for the heads up but I would not be to concerned with these tactics. I would like to hear from someone who works as a lawyer or paralegal but from my understanding a cops speedometer is not sufficient evidence in court. No gun = no ticket. I have been pulled over twice on the highway for passing the opp and in both cases they used that as their justification for pulling me over but never issued me a speeding ticket. I passed doing 25 over and 35 over. In one of the cases they where kind enough to charge me for not having a valid plate sticker - oops.

Pacing is a valid speed measuring method. Will wait for someone to post the exact text, but I am sure it will be on the first page of the legal section of the site...

A cop does not need a radar / lidar to issue you a ticket for speeding. A pace using his speedometer is good enough.

Pacing seems to imply the you must be followed for a period of time which did not happen I my case. In both my situations the cherries came on as soon as I passed them which might explain why there was no speeding ticket issued. Using pacing to determine speed and issue a ticket is a new one for me, do you have a specific case or the legislation on pacing? I will scan through the legal section but pls feel free to pm with a specific source (yeh I'm bit of a geek, I like to read legal mumbo jumbo when is raining and I can't ride).

No case law handy, but a quick google produces:

If you use the search function here in the legal section and a few should pop up.

HTA will have it somewhere too (not sure if it lists the prescribed method to do so).
