BMW does not seem to have any trouble selling the R1200GS's. I own a 2015 GSA and love it for everything from commuting to touring. Always nice to have variety and options out there, not everyone wants or can manage such a tall bike, but I don't think the desire for these big beasts will change and doubt BMW will ever have trouble selling the 1200cc boxers. There will always be riders looking for big displacement bikes of all types, whether it's sport bikes, ADV, Touring or Cruising. But the number of riders who can afford $18-$25,000 for a bike are starting to age out of the sport. The younger rider, say under 35 is dealing with a lot of career instability, record student debt and record housing prices (especially in the GTA). I think more and more of these newer/younger riders will be looking at smaller displacement bikes purely out of necessity if they want to ride. Cheaper bikes and the cheaper insurance that comes with them might be the difference between being able to afford to ride and not being able to.
 
The collective braintrust that is mainstream motorcycling sees the graffiti on the wall. As Morrisey pointed out, for every guy that can drop 25K on an adventure bike there are probably 5 that can't.
Rule one in marketing recreational consumer product is innovate or die. If your not going forward your going backward, so you follow the trend or create it. Uber tourer ,cafe racer, bobbers, baggers and now the adv bandwagon.
I like it and I'm pleased to see so many manufactures getting on board, more riders thinking about trail riding = more people joining associations, using available open spaces and providing a voice to keep spaces open , hopefully increase access to posted areas.
