Track Theft

I know a couple guys had their trailers and stuff in the trailers stolen last year while not at the track but I had read some articles a few weeks back about people having their stuff stolen at the track (can't remember the website I read it from). Has anyone had any problems with theft at the track either during the day or at night while there for the weekend? Tools, parts, bikes, trailers etc...?

Nope, nor have I heard of anyone having anything stolen on the weekend I was there.

Back in the eighties, some drunk fans would take stuff while you were sleeping. Shannonville put a fence around the competitors paddock to keep fans out at night. Now one would have to be not very smart and run the risk of getting beaten because everyone knows everyone and someone is always watching.

I remember hearing that somebody stole a generator at a SOAR round 4 or 5 years ago. Was it a rumour? Either way, ever since I heard that I've been locking my generator to the tow hook on the car.

Stuff does go missing from time to time mostly at national events where there are more people that arent known. Most racers pit close together and everyone knows everyone and keeps an eye out for each other. In my 20 something years racing touch wood I have never had anything go missing. I remember in 2007 at Daytona during the AMA weekend riders meeting we were told of people stealing wallets from trailers/garages while riders were on track. Apparently they would watch for someone getting changed then generally when the rider goes out the crew goes to pit wall and viola instant theft. There was a report that the cops were looking for someone from Dania Beach for the crimes. We had a rider lose a Yamaha inverter genny our first season pretty sure we know who did it (couldnt prove it) and they are no longer around. The paddock took up a collection headed by Sarah Beven for simon to replace it.

"...they are no longer around."

Wow Ken, that's an excellent deterrent for would-be thieves. LOL... ;)

I have had potato chips go missing

Looking at you Jay Vincent!

Seriously though, when I'm racing at Grand Bend i come home at night. I put my generator, tool box and gear in the trailer then lock the trailer. Drop the canopy as low as it will go over the bike and put my stuff around it. For the most part it's out of sight and out of mind.

I also pit near people I know and that helps too.

lol, blame the potato chips going missing on the guy in the chair. He's like a navy seal on maneuvers but on two wheels.

Moral of the story then is to leave all the valuables where they are and lock up the chips and cookies.

A long chain or lock attached to the trailer/truck is cheap insurance. Most people have a pretty large investment for a small window of fun,,cheap insurance can help
keep it fun. Should it be necessary,,no but why worry about something that a small investment can prevent.
FYI,, Caught a guy stealing stands and stuff out of the Blackfoot Tent at Shannonville one year,,,,,you do not want to be the guy that gets caught stealing stuff at the track,,,,just saying,,
