TMP - Aug 3,4,5

There crystal clear. Very nice. Thanks for the pictures. You looked at home in intermediate. For your bike do you just remove the pipe at the cat? looks pretty cool with that setup.

Another great day today. Light attendance so they only ran two groups (beginner and intermediate / advanced). That meant *tonnes* of track time. We had five or six sessions before lunch. I rode nine sessions but I think our group had 12 or 13 total - I left early so I am not sure. Best thing: at the time I left the EMS had not moved all day.

Now the bragging part: Previous best for me at TMP was 1:27.0 Today I had the modest goal of hitting 1:26.x. I did way better - quite a few mid 1:24s (best 1:24.4), and many many low 1:25s.

I think most of the gain came from braking later into 1, but I also got 2/3 kinda figured out finally. No doubt the Racer 5 Stage 4 course a few weeks ago helped too.

Thanks to smergy for spending a session with me and helping me improve my lines. It helped a lot! Met quite a few other new cool people today - lots of fun.

Pretty awesome pictures, I hope some of you can use them as a learning tool and improve your body position.

Also thanks to all the other riders for respecting this newbie on the track :)

Learned a lot! Mostly that I need to overcome my mental fear of moving my butt off the bike!!! Also that I need to relax my upper body (this improved as I did more laps, until I had an oopsie :( )

Overall I am very glad I came out.

Hopefully not an expensive oopsie?

That's fantastic, YellowDuck! Congrats on the great accomplishments! Now come on Thursday 1-9pm and we're gonna have some fun!

Exactly my thoughts, lol.. some are just begging for a crash, aren't they

Would you look at that, we finally agree on something! lol
Seriously though, the green 636 and the black 600RR pictures make me cringe.

First step towards becoming BFF ;)

I spoke to the 636 at the track and later through PM, he's aware and will be working on it.

Here are a couple of laps of my own, I seem to be stuck at around the 1:24 mark and never able to see the 1:23 as I can't ever put in a perfect lap where all lines are good. I'll try different gearing on Thursday to make me shift more and make me more aggressive.

Backwards thinking. Less shifting = faster laps. Smoother, and higher corner speed comes from less shifting and frantic braking.

Your T1 is better line wise, but too slow. Go faster, it will push you wider...lots more asphalt there.... Lines thru T2-T4 better as well....you are ready for more mph into T2....and definitely carrying more speed into the last 3 turns will help alot. Leave it in the gear you're in, just brake less, lean more (incl your body off bike) throttle sooner on exit, just be smooth with that monster.

Thanks 636ninjadude, I love MotoGP so I tried to incorporate that with stickers, and Marco was great to watch :)
Your bike's very nice too, love the new 636's. Always great to meet people with the same passion.

No, the bike got lucky, needs a new handle bar and left turn signal. funny thing is I always disliked the bar from day one so the silver lining is that I get to change it now.

yup I know I am terrible, but I will try my best to fix the positioning. Corsara sent me photos with lines showing the cross up effect and I got to work hard at fixing it. I tried through out the day to get my keester off the bike more with my upper following suite but in that last section from the pictures it shows I'm still all messed up there at least. bummer for sure. Still had fun but I must admit its a bummer cause I know I'm messing up the positioning still. You are both right though. The thing is I know about the crossed up effect and I'm still doing it so that is disappointing for sure.

Many thanks, bud! Wasn't sure about the gear change anyway, your reply is like a blessing from the sky. Now I can't wait for Thursday even more!

I had an awesome time....guys with bikes intro to track school on Saturday and trackday on Sunday......I have alot of improvement to make but it was a great way to start..... I highly recommend this way to go for anyone who thinks they wanna try the track

Everyone was friendly and helpful....I was probably the slowest in the beginner group but still had a blast

A good way to work on corner speed is to ride 1 gear too high, or ride a gutless bike.

My first racebike was an 85 hp YZF 600 that had no 2nd gear. They are notorious for killing 2nd, and of course I never knew mine was bad. I never rode it till I raced it. Went down 1 tooth in the front, up 6 in the back, and had to ride all of TMP's infield in 3rd gear. Other bikes would pull away exitting the two tight turns, but the rest of it could be made up by carrying lots of corner speed and being smooth was easier in a higher gear.

Thanks brother can't wait to get better and faster over time, don't really wanna push it too hard on my daily street ride might have to convert it.

The bikes exhaust system still has the muffler box on it (the cat is in the header). I took off the stock muffler though.

It does look a little cleaner and frees up some sound. I still need a full system or a least a midpipe though :P

how come like most of the top runners in the late 80s used the crossed up style to good effect, notably Kevin Shwantz and Wayne Gardner, kenny roberets and mick doohan even? I'm not trying to argue its not conventional or correct but I'm just wondering why many of the past top riders rode in a crossed up manner and still got away with it? I looked at pictures of Kevin and then of say marc Marquez and there's a huge difference. Is this just evolution? I'm just confused hahaha.

You put your body weight inside and as low as possible. It's physics.

Bottom line, whatever is comfortable and works for you, do it. Troy Bayliss has a crazy style that looks pretty non-smooth, but he made it work very well.

n yes I have watched this video and the original version atleast 5 times now hahaha. I even have the book and several tip sites like kevin shwantz Suzuki school bookmarked. I Am trying the hangoff and I find it really akward in that last part of the track. my knees are screwed up from soccer. If you look at Foggy too his positioning isn't conventional in the slightest yet he made it work. Ago you could say was a crossed up rider. I just wonder why I feel comfortable like that hahahaha. It is interesting though what I see in the pics anmd feel like i'm doing on the bike is much different. Oh well practice practice. On another note street riding has been ruined for me after 4 track days i'm bored outta my mind atleast riding in Niagara region.
