Simple explanation, front is for braking, rear is for traction (mainly) hence the patterns are opposite. Does not apply if you have front wheel drive.

I've never seen a front wheel drive bike. Seen front and back wheel drive and dual rear wheel drive (sidecar with driven wheel) but never FWD only.
