Tinted Visor Questions

it was 12k from the day i bought it to the day I put it away in 2010, and did around 20,000 last season

I've done the tinted visor route and I really like it. I found during dusk or heading through narrower tree lined roads with heavy shade it was hard to see out of the tinted visor forcing me to slow my pace. This usually happens on the best roads. That's when I decided to get a helmet with a built in sun visor. I purchased the HJC is16 a couple of years ago and I love the versatility of the tinted visor. I also really like the Scorpion EXO 1000 but it doesn't fit my head shape. This year I purchased a Nexx Viper X30. The tinted visors in the images below do not do the actual dark tint justice. They all look very light shaded but you cannot see through the visor from the outside in.

The beauty with these:

- Never have to switch your visor or worry about carrying the untinted/tinted shield while you ride
- never have to worry about forgetting/losing your sunglasses or extra shield
- just flip up the outer visor for more air flow while still having eye protection
- flip a switch to engage/disengage the sin visor

I only ever bought one mirrored visor (shoei). The mirrored layer was on the inside so regular exterior cleaning didn't affect it, but it was so thin that it could be scratched off with a fingernail. I actually scratched it the worst trying to clean off what I thought was a smudge inside the visor. I just use the regular dark tint now

I had a blue mirrored one on my arai for 5 years and only wore away the coating near the locking mechanism. I don't ever touch my visor unless I'm cleaning it under running water.

I have a chrome mirror visor on my X-11 ... I find the tint pretty mild, sometimes I wish it was a bit darker on bright days. Still don't recommend using it at night though.

what do you do if you have to wear glasses to see? pay a ton of money for RX sunglasses??

Every single time I've bought prescription glasses, they pretty much throw in the prescription sunglasses for free.

I was talking to a dealer the other day and a new photochromic visor insert is coming out soon. Something like a pinlock type device. There's also a new electronic LCD product that will darken on command too. I'm interested in these kinds of things because I usually go through tinted visor each season and I'm not a fan of carrying two visors around.

I was the same way, that's why I got this helmet last year. Love it. It has a jet fighter type pull down visor.

An IS-16? I have one of those...and a shark evoline too. The pull down visors are handy but i like the full range of vision with a tinted lens and I think the pull down lens affects optics a little too.

yes it's the IS-16... I never had those problems... It covers my whole vision... The only problem I sometimes have with it is if the internal shield is at it's lowest setting it sometimes touches my nose.

They are not that expensive $40ish. Bell helmets have that option. Saw them in the new GP bike cataloge

I looked up a few on google and it said 120 for a shield. that seems like a lot for a visor.

Have you guys tried to clean the lens with that velvet cloth you use for sun glases?

I use microfiber towels, one to clean and another to dry. if there's a lot of bugs and crap on it, I'll take a paper towel and run it under hot water, wring it out and drape it over the visor for 10-15 min to soften them up, then the microfiber towels.

I paid $100 for mine at the show. Expensive? Yes, but if it performs as advertised (and testing in the backyard says it will) it'll be worth it to me during the early spring / late fall riding season (I get caught out too late too often and don't like carrying a 2nd shield).

I wasn't saying it's terrible, the IS-16 is one of my fave helmets. What I mean is that depth perception is a little altered at times with both the drop down and clear visor in place and compared to a Shark clear visor, which has the best optics of any helmet I've tried, it seems a little different too. It stands to reason that viewing the outside through two surfaces is not as good as viewing through one.

What about if you have prescription glasses with "Transitions" type lenses?
Will they go dark with the dark visor or remain clear?
I currently have a dark visor and wear regular glasses but would like my next pair to be photochromic but I'd like to know first if they'd stay clear behind a dark visor.

Umm... Why not just use the regular clear ones? Your glasses would turn dark when its bright anyways... why do you need a tinted visor?
