Thoughts on 2009 BMW G650X?

Sold an XChallenge in the spring for less than $6K - German motor, all the fixes, KTM forks, 7,000 kms., yadda....
Fun bike, but your buddies' is worth about $4,000.

That may be a crashed bike. STARK had a 09 Norge with a missing saddlebag for sale in their crashed bike listing last summer - there aren't a lot of them around - be sure to check the UVIP to see whether it's been transferred to an insurance co.
 
Serious go fast but 14 years old No lack of thrills but I would opt for the 2018 650 Four.
