I dunno. I have definitely used power to my advantage, to accelerate away from drivers that I perceive as hazards or to escape from surprise lane changes by trucks. I could have braked as well and let them by, but that requires me to trust whoever's behind me to be paying attention ... which is not compatible with my personal rule #1 - ride like everyone else is trying to kill you.

Compare the bike I have now (more power than I could ever possibly "need") with the VF500F I used to have. On paper it still had more than 60hp, but that was all peak power. At cruising RPM it felt more like it had 30 - you could not accelerate away from problems. Sure, a double downshift would help, but that's consuming time that you generally don't have. A quick mirror check before giving the brakes a hard squeeze was usually my best option.

I guess I honestly agree with you to some extent. I wouldn't put it as high as 100 - the Radian I had was also around 60ish hp, but was geared pretty short and could scoot pretty well. Some acceleration ability is definitely useful on a bike. I'd say things are different in a car - I'm way more likely to be noticed when braking hard, if someone bumps me from the rear my chances aren't too bad, and it's not always practical to own a car that has the kind of power necessary to be useful for "escaping."
 
100hp, and 80 ft lbs of torque....That would be perfect for a streetbike IMHO
 
Ridiculous to say a 100hp bike is under powered. Even more so to establish a maximum on bikes when there is no scaled restriction on cars. England has the vanquish. If you are going to legislate it, at least have it across the board.

Vote = totally against it.

But really, hasn't the same thing happened in Canada. It's called the insurance black list. If you cannot insure it, then i guess it's not on the road.

Suzuki 1250 Bandit - 100hp and 86lb torque at 3600RPM, stock.... I've never felt short on horsepower, and the torque has allowed me to pull tree stumps out of the ground!

I never felt under-powered on my 104 rwhp bone-stock SV1000S with 72 ft/lbs of torque!

My 75 rated crank hp Nighthawk (easily tunable to 82-85 rwhp) is more than sufficient for my commuting/touring needs!

Go ride an Aprillia SXV550 supetmoto then tell someone you think it's underpowered since it only makes 75hp.
 
Ok, i'm thinking France missed the mark here.. Everyone wants the power for the get up and go factor right. So maby what they need to do instead of restricting HP is to restrict the speed. Hay I love the idea of doing 0 to 100kph in 6 seconds, hell why not 4sec or even better 2 seconds. But when you get butheads doing 299kph whell..... Just restrict the bikes to say 140kph, I mean who needs to go faster then that any ways, unless your a cop on the way to Tim Hortons :p
 
I have 85hp and gobs of torque. Adequate yes, but I still wish for another 20hp most days. :)

The fallacy in that argument is begging the question in regard to whether one must "need" anything to be free to have it.

It's not a matter of need, it is a matter of the freedom to elect to do so. It's hard for some people to understand that there is more in life than the mere "rights" doled out by authorities.

You don't need more, around Trenton you only need to have some rain to see everybody dropping their speed to 50 in 80 zone. Plus the countless drivers going 10 to 20 UNDER the speed limits almost everywhere with one lane only (when it's 2 lane or more they go 30 over...I saw this on highway 17 a LOT). We are in a nanny state, don't you remember? :D
