So the start to my first riding season may be delayed

Back in 2010, I 2upped on an sv650 and I was bitten; I needed to get a bike. Problem was, I was only 17 years old (read: high insurance + broke high school kid). By the end of the season though, I saved up enough to do the RTI course, and got my m2 by august. Waited out the long winter, 2011 riding season, then long winter once again (need to hold my license for one full year before Jevco gives me reasonable rates). Bright side to the waiting period is that I got a chance to save for the bike, gear, etc. I did extensive research on how motorcycle insurance works, the costs associated with riding, and set out a plan to get on a bike ASAP.

Fall of 2011, I purchased my mint condition 2009 Ninja 250r...been staring at it sitting in the garage all winter. Waited until the bike show to pick up my helmet.. and GP bikes had the EXO-400 which I had to pre-order because they didn’t have my size.
Order placed: Jan 7 2012
I was told that it would be ready for pick up Feb 3. Repeatedly reassured by the salesman that it would be here before the riding season for sure. I didn’t mind the wait since it'd just be sitting there until March 1st anyways (that’s when my insurance begins).
I call GP bikes on the 3rd, and they tell me it's not here yet and that it will be here on the 14th. I figure these kind of delays happen, and there’s no reason to make a fuss since I can’t ride in February anyways.
I call today, and am told it's still not in, and that it's expected to be here by March 3rd now..

Needless to say, I'm annoyed at this point because it is really being cut close now. The man on the phone said even March 3rd is not guaranteed, and that it might not be here until later. The reason I went to the GP bikes stand is because of their reputation. I'm crossing my fingers at this point because I've been waiting/working towards getting on my first bike for almost 2 years now. I understand that the delay is probably out of GP Bike's control; however, I find it misleading to promise that a helmet will be here at a certain date, extend it twice, and still not be able to guarantee the 3rd date.

Buy a cheap $60 helmet and ride with it until your new helmet comes in. When the new helmet comes in, just use the $60 one as a backup of for a passenger :P

When you first start and don't know the difference in feeling between helmets, it shouldn't matter.

Also, it's 50/50 on what March will be like. Typically it's the worst month for weather, so I don't think your helmet not coming will be that big of an issue unless it slips into mid-late April.

Can't see it when you're riding, get a different helmet, tragedy averted.

I would do that, but at this point I have other expenses regarding the bike that I have to take care of..(safety certificate, insurance, jacket, frame sliders). My brother has an extra size large helmet sitting around..but I fit a size small so I dont think that would be very safe. If it doesnt come in by the 3rd, I'll see to it that GP bikes refunds me the money and I'll walk into another store and buy one off the shelf.

Either way, hoping for the best right now..can't wait to start riding!!

Early march sucks i don't know what you're getting so excited about.

Go pick a helmet off their shelf and be done with it. Its not like you're waiting for an expensive lid anyway.

Seriously bud, pick up a cheap second helmet or get another one from GP. My order came in within 3 weeks when I bought at the show. Doubt you can blame GP

You mean Royal Distributing 2 mins away? lol

Oh boy.
I have a helmet I will give you.
Riding on the first week of March usually isn't even thinkable.
But who knows about this year????

I guess you guys are right.. I'm just super excited for the riding season to begin.. been staring at that ninja for waay too long now.

The Scorpion EXO-400 is already the cheapest helmet that Scorpion makes. If you bought an Arai, yea.... I'd be ******. You have a long time left mate. If it does bother you too much though, get your money back, go to Royal and get another helmet.

Hey, cancel the order, the get a new EXO-400 from ebay. Both of my exo400 were here within 10 days, and I saved quite a few bucks too. You already know your size, so there's nothing to risk.

Are you a chick?

March weather is normally very unpredictable. But this year's weather has been unusual so maybe March will give us OK riding conditions. Still, the wind chill is worth considering if you haven't got full fairing, heated grips, heated vest, and/or heated seat. Think what you're doing to the bike as well. If snow comes, the road crews will be out salting the roads just a make work project to keep busy. Sun comes out, weather warms up slightly and the snow turns to slush. You're riding out in that salty mess, getting salt on your forks and aluminum engine block. If it dries, you can possibly damage fork seals or corrode your nice new bike. I'd recommend you wait until late March early April to get the bike out, after the street cleaners have come by to get rid of the winter road mess. Your helmet should be in by then and you'll have a lot better time of it.

Where else would someone write a multiple paragraph diatribe about the delayed arrival of a helmet for his recreational vehicle which he now might have to wait an additional week before using...

PM me. I got 3 helmets if you live close by, you can borrow one whenever (smash it you pay for it though!)

Got a no brand **** lid I give to my gf (it's xlarge i swear to god, does not fit me very well, or my gf well).
Scorpion EXO1000 (black) [Large] (this is my primary helmet i use for colder weather or if i feel the need for built in sunglasses
Shoei RF-1100 (black) [Medium] (got it recently, wanted a glasses helmet, does not work in winter because everything fogs up)

On the flip side.... I understand everyone's got their "thing" and personal preferences but I went to Rosey Toes a week ago to get some maintenance done before I stored my bike away. The only reason why I put it away is because I don't have insurance anymore till April for the bike; otherwise I'd still be riding. At York, you still see a Suzuki Savage around on days that are above 0. Also, I only had 2 weeks total time from June to February 10th that I did not ride. It was either due to snow, or it went past -6. I go in -6 without heated **** because I've grown up jogging in -10 (or colder) weather in only ONE layer of thermal gear. The only place you actually get kinda cold are your hands; go to Rosey Toes for suggestions on what to do LOL (not that I would ever do what Ted does there).

And if you're really worried about salt, just think of it this way: does your car break down with all that **** on the road? Just go wash it when it's above 0 and sunny at your nearest spray place!

**** recreational, he said he's 17 and it's been 2 years. That makes him 19 (math is hard). I was 19 5 years ago, and I was still bumming off my parent's car. If he's oogling at his bike now it means it's gonna become his primary mode of transportation: might be a recreational vehicle for YOU but it likely won't be for him.

Thanks for the offers to lend me helmets in case it doesnt come in time..Worst case scenario, I'll buy a cheap one as a secondary/for passengers
I ordered a EXO-400 Skullbucket in XS.. it's an odd size so I doubt many places have it in stock.

And yes, I sold my car for the bike, and have been taking the TTC for a while now just to make the bike a reality. The bike will be my primary mode of transportation.. plus, bikes park for free at York University, and at my workplace so the bike doesn't cost me a lot more than the TTC/GO Bus fares I've been paying.
