looking to help get my son (teenager) on to a small bike. He does not want a scooter so trying to look at small cc options under 200cc? aside from he cbr125, what options are out there that we could look at?

needs to be streetable .

Yeah unless you want your son to be a virgin for the rest of his young life. I won't get a scooter

Grom is 125cc, and there is the cbr125. There aren't any other options below 200cc that are any good.

Did canada get nsr150 or aprilia rs125? great little bikes

Had the 2008 CBR125 and was a great bike to learn on, plus sold it for what I bought it for...the newer generation 125s are much nicer IMO and would be a great choice. Depending on his size the GROM is tiny....I sat on it (5'7") and felt like a clown on a circus bicycle...but I'm sure it's stupid fun to ride. Unfortunately not too many options under 200cc..

My brother's first bike was a Yamaha TW200... he's 6'3", so it was a little small, but was a great bike to learn on. Fully street legal, and you can get road tires for it.

LOL he is 6'3" so if you felt like a clown at 5'7"..... :) he might look like he is eating his knees

At 6'3" he's going to be big for any 200 I can think of. I was going to suggest TW225 just because cool.

why not a 250?
many more options available and 50cc isn't really that big a difference.

cbr125 would be the pick, at least you would got the Honda reliability...

which of course is no better than any other Japanese manufacturer.

I'd look at some <200cc dual purpose bikes. TW200, DR200S, maybe KLX250. The weight and riding position are great for young riders, plus you can play on the dirt and gravel.

+1

KLX250 with its 35in seat height is prolly the best option. A 6'3" guy is going to look ridiculous on any small-displacement street/standard/sport bike.

We got the RS125 in 2009 but they are fairly rare-ish and rather overpriced. Also, if the guy wants below 200 I imagine it's for restricted power and the RS125 isn't what he's looking for since it has more HP than a Ninja 250. I wouldn't call it a great beginner bike, either.

From my research the CBR125R would be the best option. It's cheap as hell new or used, has almost no maintenance requirements, uses almost no gas, is highway capable, and is way cheap on insurance. The Grom costs more, is slower, is smaller, etc. More of a niche/silly fun bike IMO. CBR is the best choice.

Agreed--or the new 300cc versions of cbr, ninja, r3: all good for a beginner. Still, I'm veering from the question and you cannot beat the cbr125 for value.

I think a 125 is plenty for a teenager. I don't think he wants his son breaking speed limits hence why he wanted to get him a scooter.

You could give him a Rebel(250) or Eliminator(125) or other low cc cruisers, their speeds are below that of the max of the cbr125, they also look pretty cool if you're into that.
Unless you're really veering towards a sport bike.
As others said, street legal dual purpose/dirt bikes are always a good option, they even had TW200's at RTI, it was hella fun to learn off of.
