Skis/Board on a Plane

I'm looking to fly to Banff/Lake Louise this season to enjoy the slopes. I'm also looking to bring my own skis and boots. Has anyone had experience with transporting gear?

There's some reading materials on AC's website, but personal experience would be nice.

From what I've read, boots in a boot bag will not be considered as an extra piece of baggage.

Skis/board are required to be in a hard/rigid case and are considered as a piece of luggage. I believe I've seen people transport with just a ski/board bag and nothing rigid.

I know I can rent there, but I'd rather not if I didn't have to.

Any input is welcomed. Thanks.

i go out west every year.

I have a snowboard bag that i load with my board, boots, gear, some cloths and snowboard. With AC i just pay the $30 each flight

Never an issue, they asked me to open my bag up in Vancouver once.

Also to save room if you are snowboarding, just dismount the bindings so you can move stuff around better.

Ive taken my skis to BC and Alberta.

I put my skis in my ski bag never had a problem. I put my boots in my big duffel with the rest of my stuff. If I was near the weight limit I would wear the boots through the check in.

ski in regular ski bag, I pull my spare socks over the ski tips and tails and extra T shirts around the bindings, those baggage handler guys dont care what your boards cost.
Boots in suitcase with all the other crap. I'm under the 50lbs but barely.

Burton roller bag with 4 boards and packed full of gear and clothes that gets checked as oversize. Then I carry a small carry on with a couple of changes of clothes and toiletries in the legal size limit.
