Riding a bike without license plate sticker?

I work for an insurance company. This situation would follow the insurance/driver. If I borrow your car get into an accident in areas where its my fault you will now have an at fault accident under your name provided that I am not insured anywhere else. Even in the cases where I am insurance with Company B and your insured with company A: Company A will charge you since they can't charge me for the claim.

What I said. I lent the car to her. She got in an accident. My insurance got a total loss claim. She got a careless charge.

I am being sued for 1 million dollars, the amount of my liability coverage FOR THE POLICY ON MY SUV.

If you have a valid insurance policy then you are covered by (b) and won't be charged for no insurance:

Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act
Operator to carry insurance card
3. (1) An operator of a motor vehicle on a highway shall have in the motor vehicle at all times,
(a) an insurance card for the motor vehicle; or
(b) an insurance card evidencing that the operator is insured under a contract of automobile insurance, and the operator shall surrender the insurance card for reasonable inspection upon the demand of a police officer. R.S.O. 1990, c. C.25, s. 3 (1).
and procide such if checked, then you are ok, but the vehicle owner can be charged with:

The vehicle owner will most likely get charged for the lack of insurance on the vehicle:

Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act
2. (1) Subject to the regulations, no owner or lessee of a motor vehicle shall,
(b) cause or permit the motor vehicle to be operated,
on a highway unless the motor vehicle is insured under a contract of automobile insurance. 1994, c. 11, s. 383; 1996, c. 21, s. 50 (3).

With no sticker, you the driver, may get charged for:

HTA 7(4)(a) No person shall drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless,
(a) there exist a currently validated permit for the vehicle

And, of course, as there is no insurance policy covering the motorcycle, then it will get towed/impounded as noted above.

Hopefully the plate was originally registered to the owner/vehicle - there are additional charges for using an incorrect license plate....

That sucks

Misinformation about no insurance in this thread.

Only the driver/rider who is the owner of the vehicle can be charged with Drive - No Insurance. Carry the insurance slip for a similar type of motor vehicle (ie insurance for your bike) and you're golden.

Careful with that one... owner could be charged, and SHOULD be charged with "owner permit operation of a motor vehicle on a highway without contract of insurance". Same $5000 fine. For many reasons, this is not a good idea, not worth the risk just to try out someone's bike.

I wouldn't be riding the bike on the highway.

Really?

Legally “highway” includes a common and public, highway, street, avenue, parkway, driveway, square, place, bridge, viaduct or trestle, any part of which is intended for or used by the general public for the passage of vehicles

Are you just going to go vroom vroom in the garage? ;)

Whos suing you? Dont tell me its the person who destroyed your suv.

As for this thread im not sure how some of you make it through life in general...

I'm getting sued by the driver that was in the other car. She is coming after the liability policy, I'm just really glad I only had a million on that policy as I'm pretty sure it's a scam. Nothing that I can do, it's her lawyers up against state farm, and I rarely hear anything regardless. In August it will be three years and still in the court.

Yes, she is still one of my best friends. **** happens and that is why we carry insurance policies. I do have a track ***** for life though, she is pretty helpful when we go for trackdays!

I'm married, but she is a cute redhead!

Occasional driver clause.

That being said, if you have a bike and are insured, and really really really want to test the other bike, swap plates, and hope no cop runs them. Or if they do that they have no idea about motorcycles and don't realize its the plates for the wrong bike. I still don't recommend this though.

just ride the bike.

Great advice from the both of you

To the OP, don't ride the bike. You're looking at a total of $175 of fines for no valtag and no insurance card (your responsibilities) which your insurance company may or may not care about come renewal time and the owner of the bike is looking at a $5000-$25,000 fine for owner permit operation - no insurance.

And I know it's a "what if" situation but no one thinks about the the risk in civil court that you're both opening yourself up to if you seriously injure or kill someone while on that test ride with no insurance and not registered... you both are getting sued for everything by the family.

Even if you had only $1m Liability. If the other person had OPCF44 and they had a $2m liability then she can sue you for that amount. Your insurance would cover for you $1m then recover the remaining loss from you. This would be an extreme situation depending on the severity of their injuries.

I wouldn't be riding the bike on the highway.

Facepalm... What difference does the highway make? Chances are that you'd get into accidents on city streets.
