Renting a motorcycle in a foreign land

Hi, I will most likely be spending some time in Brazil in September. Anyone have any experience with renting a bike. Or even more specifically, São Paulo Brazil. The city is huge and looks like a dangerous place to ride.
 
If Lightcycle and his wife are back on soon, they very well may have the most timely information possible.

Reading about their previosu truips they hhave rented in many places and would be the closest expert opinion likely.

I looked into it once out of curiosity and could only find rentals that were part of a guided tour package. I'm guessing it had something to do with the safety concerns.

Just ride your bike down there, all the cool kids are doing it!
 
Yeah that's not very far, and I'm a cool "44 yr. old" kid lol

Yes, I looked online and that is all I really saw was for the group ride packages. Maybe if the timing is right I might just do something like that.

I'm going to have a few days off while I'm there and figured it would be a good experience.

I just returned from a week in Aruba. Last Friday, I rented a Yamaha TW200 for a day to tour the island. My wife got herself an ATV, which are street legal there.

No problemo, just showed them my GM licence (and credit card!) and the guy gave me a map of the island, the key to the bikes, a quick lesson for my wife, and they sent us on our way.

We had an awsome day! And what a challenge riding through the 100 degree heat in the sand dunes in the desert, and then into the typical Latin American craziness in all the local neighbouhoods and the traffic-jammed centre of town. Lots of dented cars. They don't care!

My wife was the only ATV in the city. We pulled up to the high-end stores in the shopping district, she parallel parked the ATV and went in for a look while I sat and kept an eye on the machines!
 
I rented a G650GS in Munich and rode through the Alps for a week. I don't remember if they even checked my license, but it was no problem even with an M2.
 
Yeah that was my next question. I wonder if they recognize the M2 in Brazil. I think from now on whenever I travel I will consider trying to ride.
 
I've rented many times in Germany before, some times they checked for the M, sometimes they didn't...sometimes they wanted to take a copy of my passport too...
 
Sao Paulo is an absolute traffic disaster - been there, done that several times. I am not even remotely risk-averse and I would avoid riding a bike in the city. If you do find a rental, don't get sucked into renting a 250cc bike (seems to be almost every bike down there is a 250) because you will not enjoy it on anything outside of the core city roads - their highways are big-speed and full of huge trucks.

I won't be staying in one place very long anyway. And yes, I saw some of the traffic chaos on YouTube videos. I'll look into it in one of the smaller towns, if at all. It looks like the cost alone will put a damper on it anyway.
