Recommended camera for recording?

what would you guys recommend to use both for car mount and motorcycle?

None. Cameras for motorcycles usually only have as much memory as you installed in it which can run out very fast. If you don't have a charger directly hooked up to your battery to your camera, most likely it will only last 3 hrs max.

For car dashcams, you would probably want one that overwrites itself after the max recording time is reached so it is a constant loop and it will continuously record until you stop it. Dash cams are usually hooked up to the car so it won't run out of batteries (if it even runs on one).

If you're okay removing switching the memory card every 3 hours and replacing it with an empty one or deleting current content on it, and found a mount that works for your car, (which the suction cup for the go pro works well), that would probably be your choice.

It would probably be more efficient to have one for each if you wanted one unless you plan on recording for a short period of time.

I record 90% of my rides and it does get kind of annoying having to delete the content and charge it every few days (I had a 16GB memory card and just upgraded to 32GB but the battery probably wont last the whole 32GB of recordings anyways). I do have a charger hooked up to my bike though - just cant record and charge at the same time.

Many riders just start recording when they've reached their destination or found something interesting to record rather than record their whole ride.

oh cool, i guess i got to wait for a deal to come out.

btw how does the cam clip on your helmet? and chance of it falling off? never had something like that. I am planning to use it for bungee jump and sky diving too

Which camera are you using that doesn't allow you to charge and record at the same time?

Keep in mind the Hero3 White is really a Hero 1, so the Hero2 is actually the better camera/has a better sensor. For comparison purposes, the Hero3 Silver is the same sensor as the Hero2, and the Hero3 Black is the improved model.

Wow, I was thinking of getting a Hero3 White... If what you stated is true, I'll just go for the Hero2 and save some cash.

I have the Hero3 Black Edition and its low light sensitivity is pretty impressive.

I meant I don't have a cord hooked up to my helmet-cam as the charger is inside the "trunk" of the bike. It would be pretty annoying having my head hooked up to a cord leading to the back of my bike it can also be considered as dangerous if the cord happened to disconnect due to wind or movement.
I guess this wouldn't be a problem if you attached the camera to the bike itself, but memory will still be an issue (compared to a dash cam) as well as theft if you don't remove it every time you leave the bike.

Answer to your question: Contour Roam anyways....

You wouldn't want the back door open while riding (to charge) as that would expose the memory card slot and the USB slot to the elements.

Please take into consideration the wifi capabilities. Don't forget that there's no screen to see how it's aimed and to control the functions you have to touch the camera. With an LCD BacPac (retails for around 100$) you will be able to see what the camera is seeing or to watch back recordings. With a WiFi BacPac (retails for around 110$) you get a heavier camera (important if it's on your helmet, IMO) and a wearable remote that you can control the camera with, also you can use a smartphone with the app to control it and see how the camera is aimed. BUT, the wifi BacPac doesn't work properly and there's a LONG list of people with bricked cameras from trying to update the software to be able to use the wifi BacPac.

Or you could spend a little more now and get a lighter camera that has wifi built in. Yes you would have to buy the remote to have it, BUT you could use a smartphone with it straightaway.

I went with the Hero2 with the wifi BacPac instead of getting the 3, I have regretted ever since. I updated the camera to use the BacPac and all of a sudden it would stop recording anytime between 1-10 mins on its own. It never was accurate with how much recording time I had left and sometimes it would shut itself off. I was one of the lucky ones that didn't have the camera brick itself, but I did have to figure how to downgrade the software so that I could use it properly.

Tl;dr version - go with the Hero 3 because it's lighter and has built in wifi. Chances are you won't be able to use the wifi BacPac with the Hero 2 because gopro hasn't/won't fix the software issues.

I have the sticky mounts on my cars dash that I use sometimes. I had to get a skeleton case for it so that I could charge it and use it. With a 32gb card and set at 720p 30fps I get about 7 1/2 hours recording time.

what cam are you using? and price?

oh yeah? I hear there is many version of GoPro Hero 2 though, i guess got to look up reviews

There are multiple versions of the Hero3 -- For the Hero2, I think the only differences are in the mounts you get in the box (adventure vs motorsport vs whatever, etc)

I just got the Contour+2. It has a GPS and wifi built in and it comes with a waterproof case, 2 mounts, HDMI cable and a micro SD ready to go. If you take a look at their site you can see that for us motorcyclists its very easy to use even with gloves on. The ease of operation instantly sold me. It also includes some other basic stuff like a battery and charging cable etc. The shape of the camera is awesome for helmets and its mounting system is simple. The best part is the lense rotates so you can always record with a level horizon ;)

i got mine new on kijiji for $300.

So what brands that overwrite can be put on a bike and are weather proof.Adding a power point is pretty easy.Im looking at capturing bad situations rather then filming for fun and would really only be checking it if something happens or just to make sure it's still working. It would also be moved to the car in the winter.

I was long time gopro fan but lost mine last year. So while shopping for new one - Drift HD Ghost caught my eye. None of the battery, firmware, etc problems which seem to hunt new gopro, awesome remote, comes with 4 free goodies from gpbikes (second battery, etc). Love it so far - http://gpbikes.com/drift-hd-ghost-camera.html Pricey - yes, a bit. But 4 free accessories made it worth it for me.
