Question about Motorcycle Purchasing

Listen, the battery thing in my opinion is ********. Anyone selling a bike would first buy a battery and then sell it. If this is not the case, then buy one (since you have to anyways) bring it with you and get the bike started before you pay. It is better to spend 60 bucks on a battery than a couple thousand and be left with a lemon.

I am in Brooklin. If you want I can meet you at the guys house, I will bring my own battery and get the bike going. You are about to get screwed in my opinion.
 
^^ What he said. I'd never by a bike that wasn't running unless I was buying it for parts. Why not offer the guy 100-150 more to buy the bike safetied, at least you'll have some comfort that you'll be able to get all the paperwork done with minimum hassles that way.

Take him up on this very kind offer, zx600 certainly knows what he's looking at and this is the best way to ensure you don't buy a lemon. $1300 is a great deal, but you could easily spend another $1000 on things like tires, brakes, fluid changes, carb cleaning, valve adjustment, sprockets/chain. You can get a good deal, or you can get screwed.

Why spend $60 on a battery??? That wouldn't be the cheap thing to do.

You can always make your own battery from chicken noodle soup and a carton of eggs..

Go buy the bike real early and push it back to Brampton. This way it will be real cheap for you

I paid $800 for my current bike, and it wasn't running either when I got it. It's part of the "charm" of buying a beater.

My first bike was a good deal too. The owner said he just put a brand new battery in it. Too bad the charging system was cooked on it. I bought it uncertified for $1200 bucks.

I brought it to a mechanic and it cost me almost $1000 for certification. It needed tires,steering bearings and a few other bits and bobs. I think it needed a chain and sprockets as well. I had no idea and i was floored. My $1200 bike was now up to $2200 AND it still wouldn't charge the new battery.

Be careful out there. My good deal turned out to be a bad deal after everything else I needed to put into it just to get it on the rode. I wish I had a community of people to look to back then. I also wish I would have bought a certified $2200 bike instead.

Bring someone with you who knows bikes and can do a basic inspection with you. Don't get burned like me.

+1, this is really common in ads, "just needs a battery" or "just needs carbs cleaned", if that's all it needs, then it would be much more beneficial for a seller to just stick in the battery and sell the bike for more.
 
If the OP is bound and determined to get this bike would it not make sense to take the bike directly to someone like Rosey Toes versus it sitting and then him having to move it again to another location?

If ZX600 is willing to come with you you should take him up on that offer and go from there.

My bike is getting better every season but if I had of spent another $500 or so I may have not had to put so much into it. Then again, my ride is a 1981 and at this point there is always something to do. Your perspective ride is a 2006 so in theory it should be pretty sound once the maintenence is caught up on.

At $1300 there is likely way more value in the parts versus what the OP is going to pay for it. Then again, if he decides to start parting it out there is the pain in the $%^ of pulling parts, taking pics, putting up ads etc...

+1 cbcanada has a good point.

Nothing to do with motorcycles is cheap. This may look like a great deal now, wait until you're hit with the repairs that this bike needs!

He changed the battery, started good and everything, only thing is people are not really keen on "their word"
He called me and said he got a new battery and it runs, and would see me tomorrow. 2 minutes later called saying that he's selling it to someone else ...
what a dick.. ruined my day hearing that!

Sorry to hear that. :(

Not sure what your budget is. Even though the GS 500 is a really good starter bike there are dozens of models that would be ideal as well and literally hundreds (of not thousands) of bikes in your budget which would suit you.

There is an old adage "act in haste; repent at leisure".

For $1500-$2000 you should be able to buy a decent bike which you could sell in a couple of seasons for a minimal loss.
 
Yeah I seen a lot of bikes for 1500-2000, but the only thing is either they are very old bikes or they are 125cc's . I'm a big guy and I think a 125cc would be to small. I'm 6'2 250lbs.
 
Get the gs500 and replace the rear shock with an sv650 shock and it will raise the seat height by 1.5" more. It will also be stiffer and adjustable for your weight.. Thats what i did when i had a gs500
 
Well I understand the seller even if it sucks for you. What if you didn't show up tomorrow or did and didn't want it anymore? If there is a buyer with cash in hand then the seller must sell.

If you have a Lexus why don't you buy something with a warranty?
 
I'd say at 6'2" forget both the GS and EX and get a bandit or sv650. Way more comfy for ya and you could always convert the SV to track later on.
