Question about Motorcycle Purchasing

a buddy of mine around 200lbs also started off with a gs500. it was great for what he did. and he learned alot from it. so i don't think it should be a problem for you.

sucks that this all happened. finding a used bike that runs and also has been safetied is probably one of the smarter things you can do.
i wouldn't buy a bike that doesn't run and doesn't have a safety.

Yeah, im looking at ninja's now.. 250cc.. they look mint, & since I don't know how to ride, im thinking of starting small .. you think a ninja250 is a decent bike to start on ? most my friends are saying they are boring... get a 600cc but I rather go for a250 ... its my life not theirs lol

How old are you? Have you gotten any insurance quotes? The insurance often dictates the engine size...

I'm 22 yrs old, I got quoted from TD 5300$ for that GS500F, I will shop around for insurance for the 250, I heard dejardins is good.

just get the 250
most people can't ride a 250 to its max potential anyway (me included)

I'd wet myself if I got that for a quote. Shop around for insurance first for sure. Another bike to consider would be a ninja 300.

+1.

i started small, and I still think back on the few times I made total bonehead moves that would have ended badly had I had a bigger bike under me. I'm older and wiser now. 6 years ago I was an idiot. (Or idioter than I am now.)

A Ninja or CBR 250 are great bikes. The Ninja 300 or new CB 500 might last you longer (in terms of not "outgrowing it" but you will spend a lot less on a used Ninja or CBR 250.

The CBR would be FI which is nice; whereas the Ninja 250 is carb (300 is FI).

Since you are a younger guy the insurance savings on the 250 will likely more than offset any initial extra $ upfront for the bike.

Don't listen to that 600ss or up crap. This thread and others are great reading in the new rider forum:

Yup, that's the first thing I read when I joined this forum, lots of information to take in on that thread .
I'm gonna stick to looking for 250's , 2008-2014 . Seen a lot for 2500$

Great choice! Don't rush... If you are not sure what to look for read up the threads on that and do not be afraid to ask for help for someone to come with you. The best thing about your choice is that it is a very popular bike segment so when you move on in a few seasons you will have no problems flipping it for a minimal amount of depreciation.

The best buys seem to be the CBR 250s. My friend got a Ninja 300 last season and he loves it. However, he could have gotten a left over 2012 for at least $1500 less.

You'll be good with any of the bikes others have mentioned here. I had an EX500, it was ugly as ****, but oddly I still kind of miss it. The 250's look really good too. All of these are pretty simple to do elementary mechanical stuff on and parts are plentiful too. In fact...get an EX500 and buy my spare seat that's still sitting in the garage so you can make yourself a mobile throne.

There is another advantage to having a 250 like mine, the cost of ownership is less. In 1 year I have only stopped at Tim Hortons twice and that was when I was riding up/coming back from a country ride.

The more CCs you have the more stops you need to make, all those coffees and donuts add up, it's like some strange law of the universe. A 1200cc cruiser can carry a lot of weight so the corollary is more donut stops until you achieve your optimal cruiser weight. Then there is a knock on effect you need bigger pants, a bigger table etc.

Yeah I looked at uhaul, it 19.95 for the bike trailer and 0.69cent/km= comes up to around 140$ , I have a lexus rx350 , I think it shuld bee enough to trailer it. what do you think?

Anything will be enough to tow a trailer and bike. But if it's a vehicle under warranty you'll want to check the manual. But if it came with a hitch the weight of a single bike and trailer will be fine.

Bought a ninja 250 :) happy with it, I got to test it out for 5 minutes before I had to go to work.. bummer.. 6 more hours until I get to see the beast again :(

Blue , plasti dip'd .
I'l upload one tomorrow, im at work, didn't get much time with today :(

Congrats! You may not like the plastic dip though once you try to clean it. I bought a ZX6RR 3 weeks ago that's plasti dipped and looks great only now that it's dirty I can't get the damn thing clean! Even tried a self serve car wash with the power washer and there's no way the dirt is coming off its pretty much just stained it. Bought a new set of fairings for it because of how frustrated I got lol.
