Overpants or Chaps?

So here I am about to head back to Milton tomorrow from Ottawa and like a doofus didn't pack warm enough for the lower parts (jeans and long johns).

Does anyone here have experience with either overpants and/or chaps? I think chaps are ridiculous looking but it seems less bulky on a cruiser and maybe easier to put on.

If you have a rainsuit with you they can be used to keep out the wind on unexpectedly cold days. Most riders carry such gear when travelling away and don't think to use them for this.

I love my chaps but hate the look of them. Granted I will wear whatever if it means I am warm. If you have both why not put the chaps overtop and be extra warm?

On cooler days when I'm going to work I put on some overpants and just keep my work clothes underneath...work great at cutting on the wind on cold mornings.

I would think overpants would offer the best overall. anotehr layer covering your butt completely plus something to keep the damp/cold out.

I've been looking at some vented pants recently thionking they may have some benefit in the warmer months , and maybe I coukd even wear shorts under for when I reach my destinations

I love my chaps...but wear my rain suit over them when really cold. ;)

I love my over pants! So much easier than wearing track pants under my jeans.

Any item of leather on a woman generally looks good but on a bloke it makes them look like cowboys. Practicality be damned...call the fashion police we have a brokeback mountain in progress.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and advice. After trying on chaps and overpants at local bike shops here, I found that chaps are so much easier to put on, less bulky, and easier to hem (just cut off the bottom). Even though my backside is not covered it should be okay since, unlike a sportbike, on a cruiser the rider's butt stays in contact with the seat.

So I'll be getting chaps...let's just hope I don't get beaten up for wearing them :p.

Chaps = The Village People

If you want just wind protection I found Walmart sells some awesome $15 shells. I have a 3 in 1 jacket(mesh, waterproof, thermal). While the waterproof layer doesn't let any wind in, it doesn't breathe that well. I grabbed one of those shells from walmart and it works very well for wind protection. Two sizes bigger fits very well over my jacket. No wind gets gets through, and I don't sweat at all. The hood and high chin work kind of like a balaclava and seal out all the drafts.

I think I saw some shell pants too at Walmart. Check it out. Also I saw some shells at mark's work warehouse, but I think they were PU coated on the inside so they wouldn't breathe that well.

I just can't bring myself to wear horse riding gear on a motorcycle. Asphalt doesn't slide the same as grass and dirt. ;)

Chaps were designed to keep long grass from hurting your legs when riding your horse across the tall grass lands. Nothing to do with falling off a horse, never mind falling off a motorcycle.

For those that like the look of them, go for it. I really can't see the practicality of them, though. Anything you can say they do, pants do better. Other than framing your junk for people to admire, I suppose.

I have waterproof over pants and I ride a cruiser, I picked it up at the April show. It does the job fine, and keeps me warm enough for 0 Celsius temps. Otherwise, wool long johns and jeans all the way to 9 Celsius.

rain suit...100.00
chaps......100.00

real armoured riding pants that will save your legs,,,priceless
or 200.00

I had the kind of chaps that only covered the back of yer legs, they were worthless and fit terribly.

And when you get to Ottawa you can remove your underpants (lol) and put the chaps on and have a royal ball.:lmao:

Thanks for the suggestion. I went to Walmart and picked up a pair. If I don't use it this trip I'm sure to use it some other time.

Were they on backwards?

Sounds like a plan, not mine. I don't want to see myself in the mirror half the time let alone butt nekked in chaps. There are somethings you just can't unsee.

Note to the harley guy I saw this morning heading west on Eglington @ Kennedy Rd. Your Chaps dont go with the skate shoes you were wearing.
