Not worth the risk

Many years ago at an OPP M/C safety seminar we were warned about country roads. The locals get used to thin traffic and tend to ignore stop (Slight Tap On Pedal) signs and in particular, cutting across intersections and into opposing lanes.
Anything about idiots on their KLR's doing 120 down the gravel.

My bike winters in Mississauga and spends most of the riding season at the cottage in the Kawarthas. Best riding is early May to end of June and after Labour Day, in other words not the active summer vacation period.

I've pretty much given up riding anywhere close to the GTA, even on weekdays. Just not worth the hassle and the roads are pretty marginal.

Retired, I ride mostly weekdays to avoid crowds on back roads and the citiots on vacation and on weekends. Stay off the roads at daybreak, dusk and at night to avoid critters.

My own experience with locals in the sticks are many drivers obeying the speed limit, a PITA sometimes to get around, especially if there are 2 - 3 of them stacked up, but never had a close call with people cutting corners or other stupid maneuvers.

Yep. They do things like stop, right in the middle of the road, on the other side of a blind curve to look at the scenery etc. It's happened to me in Ontario at least a couple of times.
Sounds like a normal day anywhere near the GTA.

I think as a new rider or even new driver, they don’t experience or witness the things seasoned riders do. Long weekend? It’s the best time to get out and ride!

For sure, I’ve encountered the absent minded driver that doesn’t see me or entitled driver that doesn’t care or just congestion that makes a ride unbearable.

I don’t let it discourage me. It’s just a matter of patience and planning. I know the places to avoid. I keep a look out for the unexpected. And I just take my time and take the back roads that still are a risk but, still remain a better option. If it’s a matter of getting somewhere for a specific time, the cage is always there as an option.

Found out last weekend that using Applemaps Bluetoothed to a Chinese screen is a bad way to navigate.
Lead rider kept turning early or late, probably because of the lag.
Garmin had an issue whereby if we were off of the route for too long it would drop the entire thing, and it was too many Sutton presses to try and get it back while riding.
That being said, the roads we were on Sat & Sun were very empty, and u turns were not a problem.

100%

One of the more entertaining rides I've done in recent memory was a Sunday afternoon ride with The Shanester back from the Muskokas during a long weekend.

It was a master class in on-the-fly navigation around heavy cottage country traffic.

He even threw in some gravel roads to satisfy my Adv bike!
