Hey guys, I made the decision to move forward in purchasing a bike and the Ninja 650R / ER6-N is at the top of my list. I've sat on many bikes and tried out a few and this one is the one that seems to fit my size and needs the best. Can you guys recommend a year model to stay away from? All reviews have been fairly positive of the bikes and my buddy has the 400R which he loves and also recommends as a possible alternative. I'm looking for a 2008/09+ simply because I don't want to go too old. Anyone have a good indication of what to look for in this bike when checking it out? Any issues you know of? Thanks! EDIT: Would anyone recommend the 400R over the 650R? Just asking because my buddy has one and it seems like a great bike. Insurance isn't really a factor b/w the two for me.

Go 2012+

Seat is more comfortable, suspension is better.

Looks are also better imo.

Thought you were going dual sport.

Are you going to ride 2 up much?

If so the 650 for sure.

Solo the 400 might be more fun tho the weight is peanuts difference and you might as well have the power and the 400 harder to sell.
Seat height seems the same - I'd go 650

MacDoc...yes the plan was for the dual sport but when I get on them I just can't touch the ground. The only dual I could touch the floor on was the 500X. Unfortunately after fees and taxes I'm looking at close to $8k OTD. Even using my bike as a trade I am looking at about $5-6k so that's just too much at this time. I realized I need the size after my last trip...loved it but...just shy of power once it's all packed down. As for 2-up yes a big reason is the gf (now fiancé!) has told me she wants to do more trips together.

Get the 650 over the 400, lots of 650's around. 09+ and under 10k you should be able to get one for under 5000 out the door, if its any more your over paying.

I have the 2012 ER6N and I love this bike. Only thing is the seat could be more comfortable on longer rides. I plan on upgrading the seat if I can find an alternative

I have a 2011 Ninja 650R, it runs extremely smooth and haven't had any discomfort when going on long rides. Positioning is great and the power is surprising. They started redesigning the 650 really well from 2009 and up. 2009 + comes with digital display and a much better body.
