Newbie needs get with opinion on bike deal...

Sorry to hear about the damage to your bike MadPoet, and I completely agree with you. If I bought a minty bike, and dropped it, I would be livid. Also, I have never been one for flash. I just want something reliable, first and foremost, and something that looks half decent. To my eyes, the 500R and KZ are really nice looking bikes.

I cannot believe how badly I butchered the title of this thread. I can't even edit it. How embarrassing.
 
Forget the KZ. It's not running and a non running bike isn't the best idea for your first one. Buy a (not the one you're looking at, too expensive) Ninja 500 and be happy.
 
Older and poorly maintained 500s may have running issues. Make sure the owner kept up with all the maintenance work on it etc. Those carb jets are sensitive.

But yeah, the 500s are bullet proof bikes.
