New old stock motorcycles?

Thoughts and opinions?

I understand having a 1 or 2 year old left over but I've come across a few 4 to 5 year old new old bikes and am wondering how good of deal it actually is.

Considering they have been out of the crate and sitting in a showroom or warehouse for however many years, what would the fluids be like? Bearings? Tires could have flat spots but could also be 5 years old and hardened. Does all that need to be changed?

Just wondering if at that point is it even worth the savings if you have to spend extra money to bring the perishables back to new?

An example, lots of new 2018 and 2019 mt07s out there, but I found a new 2016 fz 09 for about the same price.

Is it really worth it to consider a 5 year old new bike?
Considering what might have to be put into it and also the already diminished resale value, I'm not sure.

If I am looking at a five year old bike, whether it is NOS or used are roughly equal for me. I am sure the dealer will be aiming for more money, but for all the reasons you listed, I am not willing to spend more than the equivalent used bike. Start to get older than five years and it is probably worth less as NOS because I want new tires on it before I ride it.

A lot of the problems could be managed... and the dealer may deal with the basic things, like changing all the fluids. Maybe they even sell it with some kind of warranty. And some perishables only wear with use, they could sit around forever - E.g. plugs, sprockets.

BUT - and this is a big but - there is usually a simply reason why a dealership has not been able to sell a bike for five years. They are usually asking way too much, and this can get worse over time i.e. they are not dropping the price every year they fail to sell it. These *could* be a good deal, but they almost never are for this reason alone

Tires, battery, brake fluid, oil change (at 0km I'd just ride it to break it in as per ususal).

Factor these costs in, and if the deal is worth it...

That brings up a good point. If you aren't handy but are willing to do some research, you could get the dealer to perform the required maintenance on the NOS bike as part of the deal (maybe not free, but cheaper than if you brought in a used bike and asked for that list to be done).

tires would need to be replaced, brake fluid would require bleeding, factor that into your price

Is it worth it? if the price is low enough after factoring things like that in and you like the bike, sure

5 year old new-non current bike stored indoors in climate controlled environment
shouldn't need much beyond an oil change and a good inspection
I wouldn't worry about tires or hoses and that

if it's been out in a barn prone to temp and humidity swings
yeah, would need to do more

problem for dealers with old stock like that is book value actually goes up over time
manu will floor plan it to the dealer for only so long, then the invoice has to be paid
they don't want cash sitting there on the floor, so they get 3rd party floor plan financing
interest rates are cheap but it still needs to be capitalized into the unit if they are handling books properly

after 5 years the unit would be in an ugly financial position, but they need to take the loss and move it
I see VOS has a new 2013 Fazer8 that is like 4 grand over valued, perfect example

Fair amount of new old stock floating around right now not at the originating dealer. The Ready Honda inventory has been getting sold off for the past month so you will see a lot of new bikes at independent places like used car dealers etc that generally you would ask yourself why do they have new bikes. Ready would sit on things at MSRP for years so not much of a surprise that there is quite a bit of them out there.

Personally I would have no problem with it. Change the fluids and go. I’d run the tires for the season and then change them, I know others won’t agree with that.

This was the response I received from one dealer on a NOS 2016 fz 09:

"Hello Mike,

Thank you for your interest in our 206 FZ09. This bike is still available and comes certified. The bike has all new fluids in it. It was just uncrated and wasn't previously ran. The tires still have a protective coat on them.

The battery is brand new. Let me know if you'd like to come and see it in person.

Please note that we are operating by appointment only at this time."

Asking 7900 plus hst, seems like a great deal on a brand new bike, considering all the NOS mt07s out there are about a few hundred more.

What's the guarantee that they will actually do an oil change and a proper fluid flush.
Unless you are there to witness it you really have no way of knowing.

Much different than where you are changing an oil change after 5k or brake fluid after 2 years of use.

pretty good deal, gen 1 doesnt have some of the electronics as gen 2, but suspension is soft on both of them so not a huge difference

VOS rose from the ashes of Suzuki of Newmarket, they are used car wheeler dealers.
I wouldn't buy anything from them at gunpoint.
I have heard similar things about vos, a dealer was telling me they get their money from some shady russian sources

Yeah I was thinking about the electronics, but I've never had them so I won't miss them, lol. I don't think it has ABS either, which I would prefer but not a deal breaker. Still has adjustable suspension and power modes, and I like the look of the first gen better, not crazy about the angry samurai looking headlights on the second Gen.

I need to sit on it and see about the riding position, though. I've been comparing bikes on cycle-ergo.com and the fz 09 seems really upright. I've sat on an FZ8, mt10 and z900 and those fit me perfectly with their slight forward lean.

The only weird thing initially was the dirtbike style seat with no stopper, your butt gets really confused as to where its supposed to be for a week
after that you dont notice it.

I'd strongly suggest a test ride first if you haven't ridden one

front end is a pogo in the corners
rear has pre-load adjustment only
tires felt like were off the road 50% of the time
not sure if that year they had fixed the snatchy throttle

I had a first year production FJ09 - same bike with some farkles
it was basically unridable at a spirited pace
coming off a VFR, you may not like this bike very much

That's what my concern is about the fz09, I've heard it's a real handful and the dirt bike riding position doesn't help. The vfr kinda spoiled me for ride/handling, it was so smooth.

Thank you, that was a great read. Very informative considering I fit the profile of the rider example they use. The bike just isn't set up for my size, and would take $$$ to address. The deal isn't so appealing anymore lol.

this bit from the article - prior to the upgrades

tells the story quite succinctly :)

Braking hard to the apex and rolling on the throttle used to cause the chassis to pitch forward and stand on its toes, followed by an abrupt weight transfer to the rear. As exciting as it was to wheelie out of turns, the feel throughout the whole event was limited.
