On the other hand, lots of builders (including Muzza) have realized you can pare the KTM 990 platform down to a similar weight to the SMCR, but with 1000cc V-twin grunt. That inspired me to buy my 990 and try rolling my own on a budget (Muzza kit is 8000 Euros):

You should definitely test ride one to make sure it meets your expectations. I got mine with a LOT of issues which are probably affecting my first impressions. Seems to make its power higher up in the rev range as opposed to just off idle like I was hoping, but again could be impacted by some of the issues. Glad I'm able to do all the work myself, otherwise I'd be flipping it (probably what the previous owner was thinking). Parts prices aren't ridiculous, and I got the bike dirt cheap, so I'm OK with throwing some more money at it for now. I'm betting on the motor internals being fine based on its reputation for being bulletproof. We'll see.
