New Bike Purchase

The BMW is a great bike, but it's odd that you aren't considering a Tuono, it's the ultimate naked Street bike for just a little more money than the Japanese, much less than the German. It's definitely more biased towards sport though so maybe that's why. Go see what the stock at Corsa Mecchanica is like before you make any decisions. Insurance is decent I pay $1600.

Thanks to all for chiming in... I appreciate it. So far looks like the Kawi Ninja or the Bimmer. Insurance was decent on both.

thats not the same class of bike OP is looking at, i guess neither is the MT10 though but thats a lot closer.
Actually, talked to the rep from Japan at the last bike show. He said they are taking dead aim at the BMW S1000R with the MT10. I would imagine that means price as well.

This, unless you're:
1. An older rider, or
2. Have lots of disposable income, or
3. both 1 and 2

Get the BMW, few people have negative reviews on that bike...except the person I quoted of course ;)

Yes punk, I m an oldfart. My daughter wished me happy 50th and said welcome to the world of discounts.
Bimmer was 875.00/ year with 2 mil. liablity

i cant speak to that specific bike but from what ive read BMW bikes in general have the most issues but also have the highest customer satisfaction rating.

"Consumer Reports’ survey of our subscribers shows that the Japanese brands are significantly more reliable than most bikes from other regions—led in order by Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda, and Kawasaki. Domestic brands Victory and Harley-*Davidson were midpack, and Triumph, Ducati, BMW, and Can-Am were the more trouble-prone brands."

with that being said, i would love a BMW s1000r, but if i was going for a liter bike ide be between the CBR1000RR, Ninja ZX10R and the R1.
ive always wanted a Kawi, and if i was buying this year that is probably what i would go with but new for 2017 Honda is rumored to have a redesigned 1000rr.
i do think that the R1 would have the easiest time being resold when the time comes though.

Need the upright riding position dude..... also anything RR is a insurance nightmare

Value for the money - Ninja 1000. I think it's an extremely underrated bike. A lot of people don't know it exists even but that's poor marketing and name choice from Kawasaki. They have to stop calling every single bike they manufacture a Ninja + a number.

There are only two things that Ninja 1000 could use and neither is a deal breaker - a bit more range (larger fuel tank) and a centre stand.
Ninja 1000 may very well be a replacement for my 2000 VFR800 down the line. I think it is more in the spirit of what people wanted from Honda than the actual Honda product, last gen VFR (too few upgrades and too expensive).
Always loved the VFR..Leading edge tech. Riding position, deal breaker... too low.
The Ninja 1000 leads in value per dollar, imo.

I have a 2011 Ninja 1000 with 65,000 kms and am very happy with the bike. Change to a 55 profile rear, stronger rear spring with suspension set up by Accelerated Technologies and the thing handles really well. Love the mid-range and upper power bands. Ride position is great, but legs get a little cramped after a long ride (I have a 34" inseam). Adjustable wind screen really does make a difference.

A friend has a 2012 Z1000. Slightly more nimble ride, but definitely more tiring being exposed to the wind. I'm not crazy about the Z1000 dash either.

Down sides

- Insurance companies think its an SS. Had to negotiate for a week before they gave me a reasonable rate. Z1000, no problems. Just shows how little insurance companies know about bikes.
- Not great for longer 2-up touring, and bag capacity is limited to 1 tail box or the 2 side bags, not both. Structurally the rear is not designed to be loaded too much.

No experience with the Fazer. I've only ridden the S1000R in a follow-the-leader demo ride. Very nimble, light and responsive, but didn't have a chance to really explore its potential. But I have spent a couple hours on the XR. The thing loves to bounce off the rev limiter. Definitely more power in the top end, but I almost prefer the mid range of the Ninja. Brakes on the XR are much better than the Ninja.

If you're looking at the Ninja 1000, you should also consider the GSX-S1000F. This review puts the Ninja better for touring, but the Suzuki better for almost everything else.

Excellent points, I had to explain the bike to insurance dude as well. The word Ninja freaked him out.
The BMW is hard to stop looking at

They are all good machines in their own respect. You really can be the only judge. I am on my 3rd BMW and have had very little trouble with them in total. The worst was a new clutch on my '06 GS. After that the brand has been fantastic.

Get what moves you the most. Would check out all the demo rides in the spring, I am guessing after you ride each of the bikes you are interested in you will find it much easier to know what you like best.
thanks for this

Deadly looking machine.... any idea on MSRP?

I have the Bmw 1000rr HP4 for two years now and it's a great bike. Paying about 1200 in insurance. My back is decent and I toured with the bike across Canada and US and it's puts a smile on my face all the time. But it is hot! If you're not wearing kevlar riding pants you will will the heat. Don't worry about the electronics or the suspensions, between heavy track days, long trips and coffee runs, it's holding up just fine.

If you are going to get the bimmer, make sure to get a rad guard, that damn thing is like butter.

It's noticeable, but I usually ride half tuck or just under the slipstream so it's not that bad. It was the first thing I noticed when I pulled on the 401 out of Endras. Coming from an R1 I felt naked against the wind, but just like anything else, you'll get used to it and I barely notice it now. From the sound of riding you want to do, I'd say look at your choices for upright as it may suit your needs, the choices you gave and the bikes the other guys put up are nice options. I've came up with SS and I'm not ready to give up on it just yet. I've been eyeing the ZX14 or even a GS for a long distance touring, but I think I'll always have an SS in my stable.

The bike is great, the mechanics and the power delivery is awesome...it is a riders bike in the sense it will let you do what you want and give you the assurance that you need and you can go the distance. The heat is an issue as well as the small screen. But, small price to pay (or just wrap the metal and get a longer screen) and you can do it all.

also, re reading your post it seems you're interested in the 1000r and here I am talking about the 1000rr. Somewhere along the post, I thought it was about the 1000rr (maybe the guy talking about the weird suspension issue from the 1000rr forum). Anyways, can't advise on the R other than the fact that I want one. :)

Yeah the heat is my only real issue, I squid around a lot though... Shorts. t shirt and sneakers kind of squid.

Is this with the R model as well.... Also, talked to sales rep and he says alarm system 270.00$ optional.... any thoughts on that one, is yours equipped with one?
