Need suggestions for a high-end laptop

There was also a brief period of time where some companies were exploring phase change immersion cooling, with a fluid like 3M Novec. I would embed a video but I can't find the visually impressive one that I'm thinking of now. I think they gave up after being unable to overcome the consumer unfriendliness of PFCs

I use a lot of "freeware" programs. Afraid that it will be very expensive buying the pay SW for Apple?

There are two ways to run Windows apps on a Mac - WINE and an actual Windows VM. WINE would be seamless but compatibility needs to be validated. For the Windows VM, I'm not sure if you actually need to open the Windows VM then launch the app(s), or if OS-X has a way to seamlessly launch them from the OS-X desktop, maybe by using something like (or better than) seamless RDP. Hopefully there are some Mac users on here that can answer that (pagind @MacDoc).

Not sure why you would do any of that if all you are running are Windows programs?

Why not just get a Windows machine?

Going back to your requirement for a lightweight and fast video editing laptop. If that's your priority.

OIC. Use a Mac program instead of my Windows editing apps.

I guess I should amend my wishlist. I edit videos like maybe 2% of the time. It's not the primary function, everything else is just typical Windows productivity. Are Macs *that* much faster for video editing?

Honestly, I can't see myself moving to a Mac. No logical reason, just a religious one, I guess.

I took your requirement literally:

Primarily looking for something with more horsepower for video editing. I'm finding the 360 videos are growing in resolution and file size so it's super slow to edit and render.

Have you watched the video I posted? Performance comparison at 17:51 should help you decide.

If the objective comparison doesn't convince you, then yes, you would be making a religious decision. But again, this recommendation was based on your original requirement. If that has changed , then so might my recommendation.

It's totally religious.

It may be faster, but I'm old and resistant to change.

I'd much rather prefer Windows over Mac. No offense intended... 😬

I get a Lenovo thinkpad whenever I need a windows machine. I have a Lenovo X1 thing right now. That's more for portability and it’s way overpowered for what I normally use it for but it's the company product line that's impressive and the build quality of the upper tier machines. For what you want you'd probably need a dedicated graphics processor but they have those just not in their ultraportable line. They have drain holes in the keyboards if you spill your coffee on them…it's a neat addition.

Or…get a MacBook Pro and spend the next few months swearing at the screen trying to make it work like a Windows machine (I'm doing that right now).

My friend is an Apple guy, I swear every time he comes over he needs special Apple-this, special Apple-that.

"Oh, I can't use that cable, it's not an Apple cable"
"Oh, I can't use that USB key, it's not formatted the Apple-way"
"Oh, I can't eat that apple, it's not from Cupertino, California..."

I'm still trying to figure out simple image manipulation in terms of just opening some photos to edit. On a windows machine I find the damn file and open it. On a Mac it's like “I'm sorry Dave I can't let you do that” (Space Odyssey reference, I'm not a Dave). It has to be opened from the right place or something ridiculous.

There are quirks that seem mysterious. Having said that the MacBook is also a very nice machine, great keyboard, lovely screen and what little video and image things I've done with it it has just laughed at and done what I want.

An iPAD pro might also fit your requirements aside from the windows thing though. The 13” ones have a great screen for movies, they can easily edit photos and videos (I have an Adobe suite running on mine) and they are ultra portable, especially the brand new one which is even thinner and lighter. If you need a keyboard for it the Magic Keyboard is a great option (there are cheaper ones though) but it makes it into a kind of laptop although the operating system is different from a MacBook.

Edit: the new iPAD pro has a processor in which is faster and more capable than some of the Apple laptops.

I'm very old-school though, very much a keyboard and keyboard shortcuts kinda guy.

I find it easier opening up a terminal window and performing command-line interface stuff, getting access to the guts of the machine that way. If Windows doesn't work the way I want it to, I'll write a startup script to bend it to my will. Used to be a Linux guy when I was in IT, edited in vi, etc.

I'd feel hamstrung without a keyboard and being forced to swipe and tap all the time.

No offense at all. I'm not actually a Mac person myself and have mever owned one, I just appreciate their value (at least the lastest non-Intel ones).

LOL, being a Unix guy is even more reason to appreciate MacOS. It's more Unix (BSD) than Linux.

You could say the same about trying to make Linux work like Windows. And then there's Microsoft trying to make Windows 11 work like MacOS, or at least look like it becaue it will never actually work like it.

So one more tip specifically for things like Lenovo. If you have any university/college nearby there's a chance that they have a preferred computer supplier with a contact. When I contact our Lenovo guy he can get me any machine at a substantial discount to what's advertised. Depending on how they operate you may not be able to do this if they require an official purchase code but as I suspect many of these guys work on the number of units they sell they may still help. I've got similar discounts though, not as steep, just by calling into Lenovo Canada and saying hey, I need XYZ specs can you help me?

Interesting. Thanks!

Will check out the Lenovo lineup to see if there's anything that matches my requirements.

Funny thing is, I used to work for IBM, so I had Stinkpads coming out my wazoo.

That came out wrong.

Also that too...

Stinkpads?!?!

Were you not exposed to consumer grade garbage at the time??
