Need advice. I was looking at a bike...

I'm thinking about adding to my stable as my little KLX250 doesn't quite have enough oomph for the highway, at least not with my fat carcass on it.

I was looking at a more road-friendly bike today, 2013, 4000kms, basically stock and by all accounts in decent shape and priced right. It fired right up and ran well for the couple of minutes that I had it going. When I shut it off however and tipped it up to look through the viewport at the oil, the oil was caramel coloured, like a Tim's double double. Is there any scenario where this isn't a huge red flag?

thx

That sounds like coolant in the oil, when you hold the bike level the oil level should be in the middle of the window you should not have to tip it to see the oil level. If it is coolant that engine is done and will need replaced shortly

Yes, I agree with Scuba Steve. Definitely moisture (water) in the oil. The only positive spin I could put on this is maybe a 2013 with original oil. Possibly the oil has picked up moisture over the years. Either way a 2013 with only 4K needs some love, all fluids would need to be changed, etc.

Any signs of that much moisture in the oil as to create the stereotypical milkshake appearance is a huge red flag. Run away, far far away.
