My bike got stolen while I was on vacation

... I have the Scorpio SR-i900 installed on it. But, again, I was away when it happened. It would've been crying for a bit and died cos the battery was at 11.8V when I left for vacation.

get YOUR facts straight before harping on this guy about cant afford it. That device is not a serious tracking device like lo-jack, or Scorpio RIDE

theives would have staked out the bike, prepped it.. It maybe checked for chains and alarms, and come back ready to act.
If you got back to each sprint and autumn, you will see dozens of similar posts here on GTAM and photos/video of bikes getting nicked. Cops tell people to use their insurance.

Sons a biotches! Sorry for your hassle.
what typically happens in a situation like this? What would the insurance payout be? I'm guessing you'd have to pay the all perils deductible too rite?

I think the company I am going with has a $300 all perils, it's a few dollars more expensive, but given that this stuff happens, I think I might go with that. :( sorry to hear OP

And please, gentlepeople, stop with the "why didn't you have an XYZ device installed". It's not helpful. He had it chained to a post, and wheel-locked. It obviously wasn't enough to stop thieves in this case but the OP wasn't exactly being careless either. I think it's a reasonable expectation that these measures should be a deterrent in many cases.

... yah, I do know about your points and they are all good. I turned off my geotagging on the pictures on my phone since I got the phone and kept it off after phone updates.

And, I, especially, DO NOT post on Facebook that I am going on vacation. I actually don't want anyone else to know about me going on a vacation on Facebook. I like it better when my friends have the surprised look them knowing that I just been here and there haha.

nope, it doesnt have to be like that as long as you're smart.

1) Make sure people don't tail you into your neighbourhood - Ie. some "good ole boys" in their pickup following you.. ;-)
2) dont advertise your bike.. ie. Have your garage doors up all day when you've got the bike in there.. see note above about "good old boys" checking out the hood.

3) Post photos and pics on public forums (facebook) of your bike at your address - especially with smartphones - GPS coordinates are saved in a lot of photos. ie. then post on facebook you're on Vacation.

People watch too much TV. They think their bike is going to get stolen and they will heroically track it down by GPS and triangulation, night-vision goggles, etc.

The best money spent is on good insurance. Nothing can stop a white van and a cordless angle grinder.

sorry to hear brother, i know the feeling

not all theives are hardcore, but you guys right, probably stolen for parts. long gone now regardless.

Getting annoyed by all these bike thefts lately, it's making me paranoid. It seems underground garages are big targets these days. Someone must have been watching that bike and waiting for the right time to pick it up. You can put on expensive locks but that won't stop them from cutting them with a grinder.

This is the exact reason I'm glad i have valet parking. No public access. Bikes are just too easy to steal.

That doesn't make it impossible either. I remember a couple posts last year of bikes being stolen from a secure parking garage.

Why didn't you put a GPS tracker on that bike?

because they are useless.

I hate to break it to you, but underground parking garages have ALWAYS been a target.

Hi, I'm assuming you're relatively new here.. Condo garages across the GTA have been big targets of stolen motorcycles. Mainly SS bikes. Thefts happen at all times of the day. One rider reported visiting his friend during the day for lunch. Came back within 2hrs and bike was gone.
Lots of new posters come here and post in shock of their stolen bike, but are hopeful because the condo has camera footage. Footage will reveal minivan with two or more guys with hoodie who just throw bike in the back. Alarm is screaming but a hammer will fix that. They will manhandle the bike not caring about plastics.. Lol.
Reality of it is the cops tell you to get insurance. The condo concierge shrug shoulders.. And theives have easy pickings. The best you can do is make your bike less attractive to steal like chaining up etc and hope they go to easier pickings.
This is common in the spring when the bikes come out of storage and again in the autumn before they are put away.

bike thieves rarely use a pickup truck. its generally a van. lower to the ground, easier to load the bike in the back, and doesnt put the stolen bike on display as they are driving away with it.

my reference with a pick up truck was in reference to "the good old boys".. a reference to "shady characters that would stick out when following you.. ie:

I guess, my thoughts/joke were lost in translation..

anyway, these 2 local guys were using pickups, but as you mentioned the vans are more common, especially as it allows them to work on ripping gout any alarms when inside..

That's definitely the best practice. No need to advertise that information.

Despite that, how long were you away for? Had you told anyone you were going away? Did you drive away? Walk out of the building with luggage? If it was a short trip, the timing would be rather coincidental. Perhaps someone in the building witnessed you leaving and noticed you had bags, or (and I hate to think it's an inside job) your front desk security saw you with bags and/or driving away and not returning same-day.

I would say either the thief(ves) knew you were going to be away those days, or they knew your daily schedule as well as you did.

I wonder if this is the same guy; how many Sarath Chhean's can there be in the GTA.
The company used for this shoot - SFP is "based out of Toronto, ON. Canada"

I told no one I was going away except the friends that were going with me. I was on vacation from March 11-15. I did the usual, parked my car on the same spot as my bike with the bike behind my car. There is no front desk, it's a townhouse. It was a short trip to Las 8Vegas. I was doing the R.Petty Muscle Car Challenge then my mother texted me that the bike is gone after my run. Smiles from ear to ear turned to "FUUUUUCK" faster than the 500-600+HP cars I drove.

One of my neighbors has a BMW F750gs, it wasn't touched and it wasn't chained as mine. Ah well, I can't do much about it now but just wait for cops to try to find it and insurance to process my claim. It might be very well be in pieces by now, which is so depressing. I had awesome memories with her. I just don't know if I can get another one, knowing that my spot is hot.

I prayed that they didn't scratched up my car... they didn't.

That's definitely the best practice. No need to advertise that information.

You know what happens if you steal a vehicle? 6 months MAX and $5000 fine (which, you can make from stolen parts).

This guy will do it again, and after that time he might get declared habitual.

I don't understand how laws get lessened because vehicles are involved.
Steal $5001, and its ten years.
Defraud $5001, ten years.
Credit card theft, ten years
Robbery, life.

Steal a $10,000 bike, 6 months.
