They are going to eventually lose that battle about dealerships. Dealers have a huge political influence in the US, and we just do whatever Americans do.

The even bigger issue is in actually getting product out there. It's unlikely that Tesla would be able to open their own branded stores in any large number, whereas they could certainly get dealership space and market that way quite easily. The same applies to motorcycles. There's a fairly local dealer that has Zero Motorcycles available, for example.

Tesla are using the model of showrooms in large urban centres. For service, its actually cheaper to send a guy out to distant areas. Stealerships are a slippery slope, because the manufacturer is typically in a battle with the dealers for warranty fraud, and they cannot control customer service.

The way things are going, Tesla is likely to be bought out by Mercedes in the near future. They are really only making significant sales in California.
