Metal distressing/aging

So im in the process of building a sleigh bed with some metal accent pieces. The pieces are cut from 1/4" plate steel and I want to "age" the steel. I heard about pouring hydrogen peroxide on the metal followed by a layer of salt. I tried this and let it sit for 3hrs but only surface rust appeared. Am I being impatient? I want the steel to actually have a pitted look to it. Does anybody know of a different process or maybe I should try again and let it sit for a couple weeks. Thanks

Yah that's definitely the look I want but a little more brownish/red colour.

I saw a doc on Gibson guitars and it had a bit on their aging department which showed a lot of the tricks and tools they used to age all the hardware on new guitars. Try googling that.
