"M" class license test... taking mine soon.. tips???

hey guys,

as stated, my m2 is up in a few weeks, booked my m test..
i have a copy of the manual..

for those who have taken the test, tips? advice? do;s and donts beside the obvious like, dont speed, etc..

Constantly mirror check, and check your blind spots, especially on turns and lane changes. Exaggerate your head motions.

Good advice there. Also, when I did my M test the tester wanted to see both feet down and a constant brake light at all stops.

I thought you were supposed to keep one foot on the back brake? I have been practicing doing that so that I don't get into bad habits before the test.
 
A side from constant mirror checks (before and after an intersection especially) they also want to see a constant brake light when u r stopped. Either hand or foot. The brake light must not go out if u change from foot brake to hand brake. To my instructor it didn't matter which foot was down. As long as the bike was under control and the light was on. Oh also a mirror check before you apply your brakes.
 
i heard...

they want u to hold in the clutch when approaching a stop,,,, brake,,,, then once stopped.. tapp into 1st..
in other words, no gearing down/engine braking
 
Look at every single obstacle on the road, parked cars, garbage trucks, whatever. Just keep your head moving every 10 seconds or so. There are points deducted if you don't.

This is incorrect. What you may have heard is about the engine braking part, every time the motorcycle slows down, they want to see brake lights. I lost a point for only tapping my brake as I downshifted to exit the highway, his exact words were "I can see you can ride and control the bike, but for the car or me behind you, I need to see that brake light come on a bit longer"

Also, when going through any intersections, gotta look left-right-left. Really exaggerate it, you'll feel like a bobble head half the time but needs to be done.

Read the book, read the sticky and you'll pass with flying colours.

+1, they dinged me a few times for "failing to observe potential hazard", exaggeration the head movements, but as far as not downshifting when driving, all they are looking for is that you have a brake light on constantly while slowing down, i suggest just driving normal and just be cognizant that the brake light is always on when slowing down/stopped. You can find a copy of what they are looking for online to give you a good idea.
 
Just did mine yesterday in Kitchener.Don't let yourself get to nervous.Go slow -I actually got a warning for going to slow {on my Busa-lol}.Make sure your always looking ,esp at traffic hazards ,pedestrian crossings etc.,leave lots of room between you and traffic {2 chevrons},signal in advance but not 2 early and stop slowly and count to 3 sec before proceeding and make sure your head turns are exagerated before taking off from a stop-same as lane changes on the highway -pretend your an owl.And 1 other thing-when they ask you to make a road side stop be sure to turn on your 4 ways and signal when leaving the road side stop.
Good Luck and be cool.It's not difficult ,just play by the rules outlined in the book.I know it's probaly counter to the way most of us ride but hey it's only 25 min.
 
Don't stress the test is stupidly easy. Just like everyone said exadurate head movements and keep to the speed limit and always maintain proper lane blocking position. Make sure your bike is properly working days and even the morning of. You don't want a signal to go out (happened to me but I fixed it pre test) and have to use unfamiliar hand signals or fail inspection. The guy before me in the test had a bad battery and after showing all his working signals couldn't start the bike so he failed the test. Ouch.

The best thing you can do is arrive early and get the testers personal take on some of the grey areas that differ between testers.
1) When stopped is one foot down and the other on the rear break good for him or does he want to see both feet on the ground?
2) when merging on highway what is his threshold for speed. Does he encourage merging at flow of traffic speed or is he hard on the 100km/h no matter what?
3) Does he consider a move to the middle lane as safe. Some testers because their is no legit blocking position in the middle are critical other understand that in no way can you always ride in far left or far right lanes.
4)Establish a signal in case you cannot hear the instructions given. Most testers are good with this but mine didn't mention it until I asked (must have been a long day of repeating the same crap)

That is all I can think of right now. Don't stress it really is just a leisure ride. I only lost marks on mine for not always moving to the right most lane on surface streets when clear. Its a bad habbit I've picked up from usually being the faster moving vehicle in traffic.
 
Make sure you know where to ride in your lane when it is 1-1/2 lanes wide. Also, try to stay in the right lane when there is a right and a left lane. When there are 3 lanes, don't ride in the middle lane. Watch where you stop at intersections when there is no limit line. Remember to keep scanning your surroundings, checking mirrors, shoulder checking and looking both ways before entering/going through an intersection. Pretend you're looking for Waldo. Watch your speed too.
 
Did my test today.
Super easy-peasy. Had 3 demerits, two i.n the main parking lot before we even left the testing complex for forgetting my turn signal after waiting for over a minute while other car road testers creeped by.

Other things - make sure your turn signals are on for about 2 seconds before moving into exit ramps on expressways.

Double check *ALL* intersections every single time, even if there are no cars coming. Really pay attention to this - it will save you beaucoup demerits. Check your mirrors all the time - make sure it's obvious you're doing it. Riders test sheet notes "every 10 seconds" -- again, easy demerits.

Keep in mind, most residential areas have 40kmh as speed limits..

Actually - where do you ride when lane is 1-1/2 lanes wide? I have been on some residential 40 km/hr streets with extra wide lanes and have had idots in cars try to pass me on the right when I am already going 10 km/hr over the limit....pisses me off!!
