Loud pipe HD's in Waterloo

I was thinking pretty much the same thing - but you answered your own question - the race bikes are tuned for performance, not noise.

Exactly, NOT noise. An entire pack of 12 or so Harley's in close formation on the first lap was quieter than a single open-pipe Harley or "performance"-can sport bike winding down Snake Rd. Makes you wonder about the need for noise in a supposed performance exhaust these days.

There has never been a need for noise in any street performance exhaust. Ever. Straight pipes, or "drag pipes", were and are designed for use in 1/4 mile racing applications, where maximum flow is needed with minimum restrictions at maximum RPM. People who put staright pipes on a street motorcycle don't have a clue about how they work; in fact, an unrestricted exhaust actually reduces performance instead of improving it.
