looking to do a trip this weekend need advice

wish I was going on that portion - not sure I can get away at all for the next while cept daily spins.

Looks good for 4 - 4.5 days.

Anyone is welcome to join, just let me know by early Friday morning :) Probably going to skip the White House visit to save 400kms.

Frog Togs are available - good stuff. Cheap rain pants and a bright yellow iCon rain jacket could both keep you dry and save your life in the kind of down pours typical for this time of year.

It works very well in rain and also as extra warmth.

Available at Cycle World near you. It packs down into it's hood pretty small and has excellent seals up front. If you test sizes wear your normal Mcycle jacket and make sure it goes on easily over it.

A set of thin poly long underwear will take care of most cold and wet situations - stay off cotton next to your skin....learned that the hard way.
Get something that comes well up your neck ( the iCon jacket is very good that way ).

Gloves - just throw a pair of large ski gloves or some such in. When you get in the mountains and the early part of the day they will come in handy. You can wear nearly everything and just carry the odd item.

A thin balaclava is useful too even with a full face and I assume you wear ear plugs.....if not do so....the noise of riding slab wears your energy down big time. Test after test shows riders more relaxed and alert when the sound is controlled.

You are going in gnarly weather season and it can be all over the map and you are going to have elevation changes ....doing 1000k days means starting very early. Layers is the key and one truly waterproof layer designed for motorcycles is important. The seals up front are critical.

This weekend may not be the greatest time for touring along the eastern seaboard with Hurricane Irene expected to make landfall. Could be widespread power outages, washed out roads, downed trees and low vacancy rates at motels (people leaving their homes to a safer distance/mandatory evacuations).

Seems your timing could not have been worse. Reroute or reschedule, if you've got sense.

Ambitious. I'd probably spend 3 days going through NYC alone. And DC. Not so much Philly. Maybe for a cheesesteak!

Did Deals Gap and back in three days a couple weeks ago. Your butt is going to be sore, but I wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

- Day one, just bomb it straight down there.
- Day two, ride around the area until it gets dark or you get tired of corners (yes, it's possible), start heading back
- Day three, head home

A lot of interstate riding, but definitely worth it

I concur - you don't want to be near that storm......go west into PA or do the Superior loop.

I'd even stay in the western PA and Eastern Ohio region. This will be insane.

Hurricane Irene is likely to become the first hurricane since Isabel in 2003 to landfall on the East Coast in the Carolinas or north. While there is uncertainty on specific track with the storm, Irene will be a large and relatively powerful storm system, with its impacts felt across the region this weekend as it churns north. It’s important to not focus totally on where the eye of Irene goes as this is a large storm; however, the position of the eye is critical in determining where the worst impacts ultimately fall. As of now, here are thoughts on what ultimately pans out with Irene.

Timing: Overrunning rain event starts on Saturday south of Philadelphia and spreads north slowly through Saturday p.m. towards Saturday Night, with rain gradually increasing in intensity and coverage as time progresses. Worst of storm generally impacts region Sunday into afternoon and early evening hours regardless of track before ending from south to north.

Rainfall: The potential for several inches of rain exists. There is uncertainty to placement of heaviest rains but if Irene’s eye tracks across New Jersey or just along the coastline in a fashion similar to Gloria, the heaviest rains will align across Eastern Pennsylvania. At minimum, most of the region could see at least four inches of rain. If the “close to coast” track takes hold, some spots could see double that.

Wind: This area where the eye track makes most of the difference. In hurricanes, winds are strongest just ahead and east of the eye track. If Irene makes landfall across North Carolina and takes a more inland track, the strongest winds will generally be confined to the Shore and could reach hurricane strength in gusts, with gusty winds into Philadelphia that could reach 30-50 mph. An eye track along or just offshore could mean sustained winds to hurricane force at the Shore.

OK Mother Nature - will you cut it out already? Killer tornadoes, earthquakes, hurricanes, heat waves - what next? Ice storm in September?
Some reports that parts of NYC ready to evacuate for this one - so knock it off!

A storm chaser is one of our clients and he is on the way down - he was here today- some of the scenarios are a direct eye wall hit on Manhattan .......

not an area to be on a pleasure ride.......storm that big ( sometimes big storms rather than powerful storms cause more damage inland ) - you wanna a good long way away.

It's being compared to the Long Island Express which did so much damage in 1938....fun to watch on the tube...not so fun in it.

FML I really wanted to try the 5 LB cheesesteak at tony lukes :(

Any ideas on a re route?

yeah western PA and eastern Ohio or do the Lake Superior loop - it's about as late in the year as you can do it now without getting very cold in the morning.....
Leave early and you've got three days of decent weather in the area before some wet on Monday.

You could cut south into Michigan and loop Lake Erie as well.....some threads on here for that loop.
Anything east even Quebec will be seriously wet and then wetter

South of Pittsburgh might be okay but even then it might be wet.

I think I will loop lake Michigan :) working on the route now

Not that I'm too concerned, but why do you recommend going counter-clockwise??

Chicago traffic is usually a chore as well, so be warned. Especially since this is the last non-holiday wknd of the summer. Lots of people will be heading onto the roads to savour the last glimmer of summer.

Border times in Sault going south into the states on the weekend should be way less than going into Michigan on the weekend from the bottom and coming home he is out of weekend traffic entirely.
I assume he would go via Mackinac Bridge

Worth the trip on it's own and the better weather is early

Ah - yeah you did say Lake Michigan - but suggestion holds for counter clockwise.

At least cruise down to MicMac bridge take a photo and then along the lake to the west. Minor variation.
Careful with the fog this morning but you'll be on slab so should not be too bad.
