KTM RC390 Leaked to world...from Canada!

I wouldn't take it personally =)

This place would be very boring and no different than stackoverflow if these things didn't happen.

Oke maybe you and rossi can drag a knee on a WARM 150. But I can do circles around you on a COLD 180.

Sounds like a challenge thrown out!

I'd pay to see this just for fun....although I am still waiting for a fight that was supposed to happen for charity b/w GTAMers....

Do we need to wait until spring until the asphalt warms up?

Forgot to add...nice bike! Can't wait to see it in real life.

No, I'll do it now on wet street car tracks. Pansies use the "only on the track" card.

Apparently, images of the new KTM RC390 were leaked out by the Canadian distributor. This tells us two things: it's coming to Canada, and it's looking awesome:

390cc is to get around the insurance bracket from 400 up in most provinces with decent insurance.
44hp, 147kg. Goofy light. Same power as the CBR500, but 110lbs less. Lighter than the Ninja 300, but +12hp.
I think its more like 75lbs lighter than a CBR500 and 9hp more for another 4g? psh.

The question is...
Will it wheelie...?

Finally... I've had my eye on the RC8 since forever. It's on my wallpaper and everything, haha. And it's a smaller bike which is great for me since I just learnt to ride!

Not a chance at $6000 unless they want to sell each one at a loss. I'm guessing somewhere around $9000.

Hahaha, what? That's the price of the 690!

There is no pricing yet, so the 4G comment is just made up. Common sense would dictate that if KTM is marketing the bike at 390 to avoid insurance costs, then they won't have insane pricing. If they make it too expensive, people will just buy 600s.
It's a relatively simple single.

CBR is listed at 434lbs, ninja at 35hp (claimed). Even 9hp is 25% more. That's actually significant on a bike that light.

Sounds like a cool bike, ugly front end though [headlight area]. I like that bike manufacturers are bringing smaller displacement bikes to Canada BUT [someone clarify, as I could be wrong] when they [little bikes] flood the market wont insurance companies increase rates for all little bikes?

I only think like this because as people move from the 600, 750 and 1000CC SS market over to the 125, 250, 300, 390cc standard market the insurance companies might be missing out on money. Then coming up with some sort of line like 'well everyone is crashing lower displacement bikes and we looked around the market, determined they are expensive to replace, and need to increase insurance bla bla bla.'

Thoughts? Or have I consumed way too much coffee this morning?

Looks like fun. A rather unfortunate looking front end, though.
It's distinctive. they want to get away from the Yahondasaki look, which, aside from colors, all look more or less the same these days.
I think it has a nice rear-end.

That's where I have seen that face before! It totally looks like that cleaning robot from the movie Wall-E!

Well kinda, google a pic I am too lazy to post one.

Bigger SS bikes crash more, have more insurance claims. Insurance is about risk avoidance. If more people buy smaller bikes, and crash less, they make more money. If fewer people avoid buying bikes because of insurance rates, no one makes money. The number of total riders on the road in Ontario has been plummeting.

The bracketing of power-to-weight and ABS makes sense in Europe. We are not that progressive here.

They are entry level rides. The current market share is not static. The manufacturers are hoping to grow the market share (see Honda Grom), not just steal a piece of the current pie, ie get more people riding. Entry level rides have lower insurance now, fact.
More riders means more insurance customers. There isn't a limited amount of insurance available, so increased insurance demand will not necessarily lead to higher prices (partly because a larger insurance pool will diversify the risk). From the insurers perspective, 2 people paying $700 a year on their 'safer' 250s (what I paid at the start) is better than 1 person on a 600+ paying 1400 (what I pay now, and I have one write off in my bag too). Basically, all else equal, more is better for insurance. For now, insurance price and lack of accessibility keeps people out at the margins. Expanding the margins brings more people and theoretically better insurance. But who knows, maybe insurers won't see it that way...
