Got caught in the rain tonight.. Decided to take bloor to church to get home to avoid streetcar tracks only to find out that church is closed for pride festival and ended up having to go around and take college. Ended up slipping on the damn streetcar tracks. Such a crappy feeling when your bike gets dinged up.. Just earlier I had spoke with a rider who t-boned a car who pulled a u-turn in front of him too..

Damn

I did that in Pittsburgh once. My bike already had some battle scares so I didn't care much.

I hate those street car tracks.

Haha yea they are awful.. Even when it's dry..a car shared my lane when he was passing a parked car and forced me to move over and as soon as I touched them I was on the ground

It was pouring like crazy, sorry to hear about the spill!

What I do is just always keep my bike as upright as possible as I go over those things, never had a problem in all my years riding.

sorry to hear about your incident, but I find it hard to believe that as soon as you drove over the tracks you went down, did you grab the front brake?
i've seen riders develop this fear of street car tracks that is completely unjustified IMO

Sounds like the tracks were parallel to his direction of travel (following his lane) vs just crossing them. Whole different barrel of monkeys and it wouldn't be the first time someone got sucked into a streetcar track (bad enough), but then found them extremely slippery when wet.

I do believe my sister had a similar experience when she rode and lived downtown.

Glad you're OK OP, but give any railway/streetcar track a ton of attention, and avoid them if at all possible - for streetcar tracks, pick another lane if possible, or get yourself in a lane position that is safe and then protect it - you say a car shared your lane, were you in the correct blocking position?

Riding safely in the lane with streetcar tracks AND being in the blocking position can often be difficult.

It was raining. I should have waited it out but I didn't. I was travelling parallel to the tracks not perpendicular over them. I was in between the tracks and a car to the right of me came into my lane beside me so I moved slightly to the left of the lane and as soon as I touched the track I was down. I'm not afraid of driving over street car tracks. Just sharing an experience so that other new riders might not end up in the same position.

And I'm totally fine thanks everyone. Just don't want it to happen to other people

I agree, really depends on the lane/track config.

No I wasn't in the correct blocking position. I should have moved to the right lane right away but I wanted to cross over the tracks on an angle. I had planned a route without streetcar tracks but road closures made me have to take a different way. I'll be waiting out the rain for sure now.

And while I feel like blaming the other driver.. I can't really. I should have just pulled over for a bit

While waiting it out seems like a good option sometimes you can't so have a second option.

There are reasons for blocking positions but so many riders fail to apply the disciplines taught in courses.

this...

I can imagine a little front wheel like a 90-100 would just get eaten up entirely...
