I was under the assumption my insurance would be cheaper once I had the M. Called statefarm and they said it doesn't matter, M or M2 is not factored into the figure.

did your premiums drop when you got your M?
 
I didn't notice any drop in insurance when I got my full M, though I was 19. Insurance seems to drop with age, there was a significant drop at 25, and just had an even larger one, like in half, at 30.
 
They should, my wife and I do our M test in a few weeks. Wife was speaking with the insuirance people the other day about something unrelated. Although we get no benefit this year as we have already renewed, they said they will adjust next year
 
We have state farm. Wife passed her M a month ago, no change. Can't complain about the rates though, best in town.

I've had my M since 1989 but I asked about it last year because of the man I was living with at the time (had his M2) and State Farm said there'd be no difference in rates.
 
No drop but congrats anyway... Its a relief to be over and done with the whole graduated licensing process.
 
What is the purpose of this M license then?

What advantages does it bring, apart from the fact that it is not void after 5 years

That's the big advantage.. Other than that, way back when, before the "warn range" became drunk driving, when we were allowed to go up to 0.08, you could have grabbed a beer or two and not been charged criminally for riding.

Its a mystery and stupid that rates dont change after getting the M licence, WTF? Isn't the M licence the mother of all tests and the one that proves that you can ride safely in a highway?

This just proves the government doesn't do anything to prevent accidents lol

Insurance companies work with probability, it means the at fault accident rate of M and M2 riders are the same.
 
Congratulation for your M....it just is an achievement of satisfaction at personal level...means nothing to insurance companies..
 
I got my M and immediately found other insurance agencies (went with Jevco) to be cheaper than State Farm that I had used until then.

My rate dropped by just under $400 for the year after I sent my M certification to Riders Plus. The $400 rate basically covered the cost of doing the M2X through RTI so for me, it was a wash and solidified my decision to use RTI rather than going to the ministry on my own. The value of the knowledge offered by the RTI instructor was worth every cent IMHO.
 
It will drop if your not with statfarm. If you dont have an SS and your with statfarm look for another insurance company as you will find a better rate if your over 25 and with a full M. Riders choice, TD ect . . .
 
So this is what I've figured so far. If you're young, say, under 19, only a few places will insure you (ie. Rider's Plus)
If you're young and have taken the RTI (or equivalent) course, your insurance will drop.
If you're over 25, regardless of license, State Farm seems to be the cheapest.
If you're over 25 and have earned your M, it's time to shop again and Rider's Plus or Jevco might be the cheapest at that point.

Am I sorta close?
 
Jevco seems to have similar rates to SF until you hit 30 and then they drop to 1/2
