Love the jailbreak scene, and love the possibilities, so lets share our knowledge.

Check post #9 for jailbreak Q&A...

jailbreak tweaks videos, http://www.youtube.com/user/myjailbreakmovies#g/u

ipad 2 jailbreak is here(only for firmware 4.3.3), and 5.0.1......plus iPhone 4S.
here is a good link everything ipad.....http://www.ipadforums.net/forumindex.php

ill keep updating tweaks on this first post as they come in.

Cydia, is what you use to enhance your iOS device, you get stuff called tweaks, or themes, other stuff too.
For those that don't know, open cydia, click Manage, open Packages, this way you see what tweaks are installed on your device (not your normal apps, only tweaks).
add from the list below what you don't have, not mandatory, you decide what you need, by clicking search and see if you like them by reading their info.
if you like, click on install, top right corner and confirm(can also install more than one tweak at time by choosing queuing).

Do your own add-ons(some tweaks carry add-ons, and you get them after downloading the tweak), click sections and find them or do a search by entering the same name of the tweak, and you will see the add-ons listed.
for example: scrollingboard, you need to get those add-ons, might need enabling after, you will see.

Please check Compatibility(firmware and device).

iPad tweaks here: http://www.ipadforums.net/jailbreak-applications-tweaks/25824-ultimate-list-jailbreak-tweaks.html

With the release of IOS5, a major IOS revision, it is important to note that JB tweaks and apps will normally need an update from the developer to provide IOS5 compatibility. Where a tweak is confirmed as working on JB IOS5 its title will be highlighted in BLUE.

Free Tweaks
These tweaks can be freely downloaded from Cydia for nada, nowt, zilch... Go on... What are you waiting for?

Action Menu - enhance the copy & paste functionality for IOS including pasteboard favourites
Activator - assign screen gestures and button press combinations to do a multitude of actions, from launching apps to controlling the iPod application.
Alphacon - control the transparency of your icons on the springboard, dock, and switcher independently of each other.
Animate - if you are running a 4.3.x jailbreak using @i0n1c's untether then this tweak adds animated boot logo capabilities to your iPad. There are lots to choose from in Cydia, my personal favourite being "Animate Apple".
Auto Location - Turns the GPS on your iPad on whenever an app requests location services and off again when it is closed.
BackBoard - Change your icon layout a lot? This app is for you. It saves as many different layouts and configurations as you like and lets you apply, update, or delete them as required. Essential for the compulsive themer!
Black Keyboard - does exactly what it says on the tin. Turns you iPad keyboard every h4x0r5 favourite colour, BL4CK!
Browser Changer - Allows you to change the default browser for YouTube, Google Maps, etc. from Mobile Safari to any other 3rd party browser. Great for users of Atomic and iCab! (via Mickey330)
Bolt - gets rid of the battery icon in your status bar, except when charging, in which case you will see a bolt! Turn on battery percentage for maximum usefulness, otherwise you won't know how much charge you have!
BTStackMouse - use a bluetooth mouse (or the Apple Magic Trackpad) with your iPad with this cool tweak.
BytaFont - Apple did a great job of the IOS fonts, but everyone likes a change now and again. Hundreds of BytaFont compatible fonts are available on Cydia - My personal favourite? - Lato.
CrashReporter - Useful tool to track down the cause of application crashes or send the logs to tweak developers for further analysis.
ChangeCarrier - Change the carrier name shown on your iPad to a custom string. So much fun to personalize your iPad! (via Mickey330)
CyDelete - Remove Cydia apps just like any other apps store app. Make them wiggle and press the cross to remove! (via nymosis)
DietBar - Ever noticed how fat the title bars are in applications? This little tweak puts them on a diet! (via graywolf)
FakeCarrier - One of the many tweaks to change your carrier name
FakeClockUp - This tweak allows you to change the default animation speed of IOS graphics. Amazingly, when you increase the animation speed the whole iPad SEEMS to perform much faster. It's all an illusion, BUT IT WORKS! Try it out... You'll be amazed... For added fun, try slowing things down. Slow-motion IOS is very weird indeed! - you will need to add the moyashi repo to Cydia to find this tweak - http://hitoriblog.com/apt/
FastCopy - There is a tiny delay built into IOS before the copy / paste popup appears. This tweak removes it...
FolderCloser - If you still use stock IOS folders and are tired of them sticking open, this little tweak will close them once you launch an app...
FullForce - Run any iPhone apps on your iPad? This tweak tricks them into thinking they are iPad apps so they run pseudo-natively. Difficult to descrive, but effective none the less - Try it with BytaFont for a good demonstration of "before & after".
iBlank - Create blank transparent icons on the springboard to make your own weird and wonderful layouts (via Mickey330)
Icon Renamer - You can tell what is does, can't you? Change the name of any app on your springboard. e.g. rename "Friendly" to "FaceBook".
IncarcerApp - disables (and enables) the home button via an activator gesture whenever you choose, effectively locking you into the current app. Ideal for letting young kids loose in an app!
iSHSH1T - Save your SHSH Blobs (you know what they are don't you!) locally on your iPad for blob saving goodness on the go!
ListLauncher - Adds an alphabetical list of apps on the Spotlight page for quick and easy access, plus it uses up all that wasted space! (via Mickey330)
MakeItMine - another tweak which lets you change the carrier name on your device to whatever you'd like!
ManualCorrect - Do you hate Apple's spelling auto-correction as much as I do? This tweak turns it on it's head. No longer is the suggestion automatically substituted as you type. If the correction is what you want, you tap it. Puts you back in control!
MultiIconMover - Rearrange your icons a lot? This will help. You can "tag" multiple icons to move at once. Tap on each one as they wiggle and it gets "ticked". Then press the home button to move all the tagged icons to the current location, including into a folder! Coolness.
Netatalk - Open-source implementation of AppleTalk for Unix systems to allow your to use standard Apple file sharing to connect your iPad. (via poser)
NoLockScreen - Sick and tired of sliding to unlock? This tweak removes the lock screen altogether, as long as you don't have a passcode set.
No Not Charging - Yes, we know when the iPad is plugged in to a USB socket it is normally "Not Charging" (or charging really really slowly). This tweak gets rid of the text telling you this fact in the status bar...
OpenNotifier - Customizable status bar notifier so you don't have to remember what annoying pop-up you just dismissed! (via Mickey330)
OpenSSH - Every hackers friend. OpenSSH does exactly that. Provides a SSH interface to your iPad so that you can easily manage files on the filesystem from any one of a zillion SSH / FTP clients. Don't forget to change your root password from "alpine" otherwise I'll be hacking you later
wink.png

PC Networking - adds native Windows networking support via samba for your iPad (via Mickey330)
PowerUp - adds reboot, respring, and safe mode options to the standard power off slider as well as providing some additional styling options (via poser)
PullToRefresh for Mail - Pull to refresh is one of the best touch user interface ideas EVA! This tweak adds it to the iPad mail application, allowing you to pull the message list down to refresh all your mail accounts.
PullToRefresh for Safari - Same as above, but for mobile Safari!
QuickLock 2 - Tap it and the screen locks! (via Mickey330)
RemoveBackground - Paranoid about all those apps running in the background in Apples multitasking environment? Remove background kills them all in one fell swoop. Adds a nice SBSettings toggle to make it double easy too!
Reset Safari for SBSettings - Provides a SBSettings Toggle to clear the cache, remove history, and delete cookies in Safari (via Mickey330)
RunningList - Put a list of your running (multitasked) applications on the spotlight search screen by default.
Safari Tab Closer - Quickly close all open tabs in Mobile Safari (via Mickey330)
SBSettings - Prime candidate for THE ultimate Cydia tweak. Swipe the status bar and toggle on and off your iPad settings such as wifi, bluetooth, etc. to your hearts content. Cydia also has lots of addon tweaks and many applications install their own! Uber-Cool. Now with full IOS5 support, including integration with the new notification slider!
SplitMail - Changes the portrait view of the Mail app to look like the landscape view with the sidebar always visible (via pcmarcel)
SwitcherMod - Ever felt like removing all the recently used apps from your task switcher automatically? This tweak can do it and more!
Tab+ - Increase the limit on the number of pages you can have open in Safari from the basic 9 (via OUTL4W)
TVOut2 Mirror TVOut - Mirror your idevice to an external monitor with options to fill the screen (via poser)
Webscrollian - A simple little tweak to enable faster content scrolling for web views (via poser)
WinterBoard - The jailbreakers theme manger. Fancy a change of scenery from good old stock IOS? Winterboard allows you to apply a myriad of themes and tweaks to the look and feel of IOS. Just make sure the ones you download are for the iPad! OK?
YoutubeToMP3 - Rip the audio track from any YouTube video, including your favourite music videos, in an MP3 file on your iPad (via OUTL4W)

Paid Tweaks
These tweaks can be downloaded from Cydia for a very reasonable price. Remember, developers need your support. They have put their time and effort into making applications for you. Often, developers will release free tweaks but these have to be offset and supported by their paid applications as well. If something is useful and adds value to your jailbreak experience, please consider paying for it. Don't be a Pirate!

Adblocker - Easy to use advertisement blocker for Safari and other applications that use browser-like views (via Mickey330)
Action Menu PlusPack - ActionMenu not enough for you? Are you mad for social networks? The pluspack adds lots of new features to the cut and paste goodness of IOS. e.g. "Tweet the currently selected text", "Send to Pastie", and "Locate on Google Maps", to name but a few.
AirServer - transforms your iPad into a n AirTunes and AirPlay receiver so you can stream media to your device or between devices (via poser)
AlertArtist - easily style the alert pop-ups on IOS either to exactly your own taste or using a variety of pre-built colour themes which ship with the app (via poser)
Apptivator - an extension to Activator which adds a "double tap" action to all your springboard icons which can then be assigned any other activator action.
Auto3G - Automatically turns off 3G when the device is locked, thus saving precious battery cycles. Re-enables when iPad is unlocked - obviously only for devices with 3G! (via nymosis)
Barrel - 3D page transitions with lots of effects to choose from (via OUTL4W)
BTStackKeyboard - use any Bluetooth HID Keyboard with your iPad.
ColorMailLabels - Give each of your email accounts a different colour label in the unified mail inbox just like GMail!

DisplayOut - Send the display of your iPad through the VGA / HDMI cable regardless of whether an application has been coded to support it or not.
Display Recorder - Ever fancied making a video demo from your iPad? This is the way to do it (via OUTL4W)
Dock - A nice alternative to the multi-tasking switcher with themes, favourites, and more! - comes with a 3 day free trial.
FBphotoSave - allows you to save photos from the official Facebook app to your camera roll on the iPad (via poser)
Folder Enhancer - IOS Folders are OK. FolderEnhancer makes them a whole lot better...
GPowerPro - Hold down the power button for a few seconds and your iPad will ask if you want to slide to turn off... This tweak adds reboot and respring to the list. Nice!
Gridlock - Place your icons anywhere on the springboard grid without the need to create transparent icons using iBlank (via OUTL4W)
Iconoclasm - The iPad screen seems to be sparsely populated with icons. Surely we can fit a lot more on there? Iconoclasm to the rescue. Apply lots of different icon layouts, for example, 6x6, which is 36 icons per page!
iFile - it is THE file manager for IOS. If you want access to your files, this is the way to do it. End of.
infiniboard, infinidock, & infinifolders - These apps allow you to add more, more, more icons to your springboard, dock, and folders by introducing, amongst other things, vertical paging to each.
Inspell - An alternative and configurable spellcheck and autocorrect system with access to dozens of dictionaries using Hunspell (via Mickey330)
iStrings - Change the text for IOS popup messages (via OUTL4W)

OverBoard - Shows an overview of all your springboard pages allowing you to tap to jump directly to one (via Mickey330)
Photoalbums+ for iPad - create folders within the native photos app, and optionally password protect them, without iTunes sync (via OUTL4W)
PhotoMail - add multiple photos to your emails via the native Mail app on the iPad (via poser)
PkgBackup - Backup and restore a complete list of your Cydia Apps, settings, repositories, and more. Every jailbreakers favourite friend. You'll never have to start afresh, unless you want to, ever again.
Pwntunes - Hate iTunes? Pwntunes allows you to drag & drop music and other media onto your iPad without using iTunes on your desktop (via OUTL4W)
RetinaPad - Why oh why does the 2x mode for iPhone4 apps on the iPad look so rubbish? Who knows, but this tweak makes the applications think they are on a retina screen and therefore show in all their high resolution glory in 2x mode on the iPad.
Safari Download Manager - An awesome extension to Safari so you can download to your hearts content!
Safari Upload Enabler - Another awesome extension to Safari that allows you to upload native files from your iPad to a website, such as adding an attachment to your favourite webmail client!
ScreenDimmer - Want more control over your screen backlight? This is the app for you. Dim the screen after a number of seconds and turn the backlight off after that... Great for battery life!
ScrollingBoard - Turbocharge your iPad dock. Add more icons, swipe right for more pages of icons in the dock, and even download addons!
Shrink - Make all of your icons smaller, whether on the springboard, dock, or switcher. Combine with iconoclasm to fit even more icons on screen comfortably.
SleepFX - want to see some stunning effects when you put your iPad into sleep mode. This is the tweak for you... (via OUTL4W)
SmartScreen for iPad IOS - Widgets on your iPad lock screen such as clocks, calendars, etc. (via Mickey330)
Springtomize - Modify the springboard in a variety of ways (via Mickey330)
Syncronicity - Use your iPad whilst it syncs with iTunes (via OUTL4W)
WiFi Booster - Removes the internal signal strength limit from the WiFi Settings pane to allow you to see all the networks broadcasting.
xBackup - Backup and restore all your Cydia packages and sources (via poser)
YourTube HD - Download videos, save and view them from within the iPad's native YouTube app with this extension (via Mickey330)
3GUnrestrictor - Tired of apps that tell you you can't use them of download something because you are not connected to WiFi? 3GU fools them into thinking you are. No more blocky YouTube videos!
5-Row Keyboard for iPad - Want a row of numbers or symbols above the keyboard, just like any laptop or desktop? This is how we do it, in conjunction with WinterBoard of course!

NOTE: Not all these tweaks can be installed together. Some will clash because they perform similar functions. The good news is that Cydia does a very good job of letting you know when a clash is imminent, provided the package has been correctly specified by the developer. Cydia will even remove the offending program automatically when you try to install something which clashes...

Tweaks are 4.3.3 AND iPad2 compatible unless stated otherwise.

Happy Tweaking fellow Jailbreakers

A jailbroken iPhone is quite possibly the best phone you can buy. biteSMS, SBSsettings, AppSync, Installous and Winterboard...are must haves/

I might try this on my old 3G.. don't have the guts to JB my iphone4 plus it already does everything I could ever want from a phone.

I love steve jobs I have a picture of him above my bed.

Just got an iphone 4 and probably looking to jailbreak in the near future. What are the general do's and don'ts of jailbreaking? I read that some actions may cause the phone to "brick".

Jailbreaking, eh? What's the matter, phone not open enough for you? Feeling too restricted? I know this great little open operating system I could recommend... :D

I kid, I kid!

What is jailbreaking?

Jailbreaking is the name given to the process which allows you to access the full features and functionality of your Apple device by enabling privileged control of the operating system. On Android devices this is known as "rooting". The term jailbreaking tends to be synonymous with Apple devices although it is also used to describe the same process on some other devices, such as the Playstation3.

What does jailbreaking my device do?
In simple words, it allows access to the entire IOS filesystem, which in turn means you can install applications and modify files which Apple does not allow on a "stock" device.
For more technical users, services such as SSH and FTP are easily enabled, allowing you to conveniently manage files directly on the device rather than being tied to iTunes and the restrictions it imposes. Those familiar with OSX, Linux, or Unix will recognise IOS as it is a unix-like POSIX-compliant operating system.

Is jailbreaking legal?
Yes, it is generally accepted that jailbreaking is legal. In the USA, the Copyright Office recognised an exemption to the DMCA to permit jailbreaking, but the exception must be reviewed every 3 years. In Europe and the UK it is a little more of a grey area, but the same general legal provisions stand true. People are entitled to modify equipment they own to allow them to inter-operate with other services, provided it doesn't breach copyright.

I heard jailbreaking allows me to get free apps, is this true?
Getting apps for free which should normally be paid for is piracy, plain and simple. Pirates need to jailbreak their devices as a first step to allow them to use cracked applications, but jailbreaking alone does not enable piracy.

But if I JB I have to stop using the App Store and iTunes, right?
NO! Jailbreaking in no way interferes with how you work on your iPad today. You can carry on using and purchasing Apps from the App store and syncing and purchasing music, films, and all other media with iTunes as normal. Think of jailbreaking as an enabler. It does not remove your ability to do what your iPad was designed for, it just enhances it! iTunes and the App Store don't notice you are jailbroken and don't treat you any differently to when you were running stock IOS. The only exception to this is if you are being a dirty rotten pirate, but you know not to do that, don't you?

I heard jailbreaking could brick my iPad or render it useless, should I be concerned?
NO! There has, to our knowledge, never been a truly bricked iPad as a result of jailbreaking. The term "brick" should generally only be used to describe a device which cannot under any circumstances be recovered or restored to an operational state. Apple devices are designed with with a failsafe restore mode, known as "Device Firmware Update" or DFU mode for short. DFU mode is activated by a hardware button combination, and as such as no dependency on the state, operational or otherwise, of the IOS firmware. Unless you have a broken "home" or "power" button on your device (or other hardware defect) you will always be able to get into DFU mode and therefore restore your iPad to factory defaults via iTunes should something go wrong.

I heard jailbreaking voids my Apple warranty, should I be concerned?
NO! But, If you take a jailbroken device into an Apple store they may refuse to service it on the grounds that you have modified it which breaks the license agreement between you and them. In that respect your warranty is void. However, you can easily remove a jailbreak from any device before you submit it for warranty repair. Even if you have a hardware fault, there are some simple logical steps you can take to shield the jailbroken status of your device from Apple if you absolutely have to present it to them jailbroken.

I've read that Jailbreaking will drain my battery faster, is this true?
No! There is nothing in the actual jailbreak which will cause your iPad battery to drain faster. Nor will it interfere with your wireless or 3G connection in any way. However, jailbreaking will allow you to add tweaks and applications to your iPad which may, either through their deliberate design or because of software bugs, stress the battery more than normal. For example, an app which enables true multitasking, such as "Backgrounder" will make several applications run concurrently on your device. This will certainly drain your battery faster than a stock device which can only run one foreground task.

How to I remove the jailbreak, or un-jailbreak my iPad?
If you try it out and don't like it, you can remove all traces of a jailbreak by connecting the device to iTunes and restoring it to stock IOS. Simply connect the device to iTunes, put the device in DFU mode, and press the "restore" button. More information on DFU Mode and how to activate it can be found using google.
You should alway do this if you are taking a device back to an Apple store for warranty repair. Any Apple store employee should service your device as normal, provided you have removed the jailbreak before you give it to them. They will not be able to tell the device was jailbroken, even using their diagnostic toolset. Always plead ignorance if they ask. The best answer is "What is jailbreaking?". If they direct you to this post then all bets are off!

You've mentioned DFU mode twice, tell me more!
You can put your device into a special firmware upgrade state called "Device Firmware Update" or DFU mode for short. Once in this state, any iPad should accept a valid firmware restore request when connected to iTunes.
To attain DFU mode it is often easiest (but not essential) to start from a powered off state, and immediately power on and press the "home" and "power" buttons together for exactly 10 seconds then release the "power" button and continue to hold "home". At around the 15 second mark the device will enter DFU mode although it will still show a black screen. The timing is critical and many people complain their device won't enter DFU mode when they first attempt it. If you see the Apple logo, you messed it up. Be assured, it is all about your timing and nothing to do with your device, unless you are unlucky enough to have a hardware button fault. Practice time and time again. Do not be distracted by the fact that the device resets at the 7 second mark. This is normal and you must ignore it. Once you get the knack you will be able to put any iPad into DFU mode in your sleep by simply pressing both buttons, counting to ten and then taking your finger off the power button.
Most of the recent jailbreak tools help you put your device into DFU mode by providing on-screen instructions and countdowns. This makes the process much easier for beginners and is a good way to learn the process and the timings required. There are lots of helpful YouTube demos of it as well.

What happens after I jailbreak my iPad?
After the iPad is jailbroken, new 3rd party applications can be installed from "Cydia" which is an application installed to your homescreen during the jailbreak process. Think of it like an app store for jailbroken apps.
For the more technical audience, Cydia is a front-end for APT and the dpkg system allowing it to provide packages of files for installation via a decentralised system of repositories. Wikipedia has an excellent article on Cydia with plenty of detail on its purpose, function, and history.
Cydia can be a bit daunting at the beginning, but getting familiar with it is the key to getting the most our of your experience. Some applications you will want to try out will not work on your iPad. It can be a bit "trial and error". Use the search features of the forum and ask questions when you get stuck with a unique problem. Just be prepared to restore if you get a bit too adventurous, and remember you can't truly break (or brick) your iPad with an app!

I'm sold! How do I go about jailbreaking?
First of all, remember the magic word....backup! Connect to iTunes and do a full sync & backup, just in case.

Happy Jailbreaking fellow Hackers!

PS...i did not write this up!!!!

I got the XBMC on my iPad...but honestly...I dont see the point....Air Video server streams and converts beautifully and is a lot easier to set up. I am finding that there are fewer and fewer jailbreak apps that I regularly use. Aside from biteSMS and SBSsettings I can't really think of any other jailbroken apps that I REALLY need.

i got that xbmc yesterday for ipad, but don't know to change weather to celcius.

As a general rule for jailbreak stuff, I try to stay away from stuff that messes with the OS too much as I have found they really ruin the iOS experience, causing slowdowns, battery loss, random freezes, and crashes. I really like some apps such as Lockinfo which shows info on your lock screen, but it would randomly freeze my phone for anywhere from ten seconds to a minute so it had to go. As mentioned, the less you screw with the OS, the happier you'll be

My list is:

SBsettings is a must
VLC is only available through Cydia now
RemoveBG clears all the apps in the background
Installous lets you try apps before paying for them
Itether lets me do a bluetooth internet tether from my ipad to my iphone without killing the battery on either
Ifile lets you access your iOS file system
