I didn't know that, and always thought that zipper was there for (limited) protection, albeit a lot less than a 360 zipper. Makes sense, and also makes me want to buy a proper leather jacket and matching pants even more this year -- Currently I just have my JR Alter Ego jacket and pants with the 12" zipper that I bought when I started riding a year ago.
While we are somewhat on the topic, how well do higher-tier brands actually hold up in a crash situation, aka is Alpinestars or Dainese really worth the money over Icon, Teknic, Speed & Strength, etc? I'm currently considering both the Alpinestars Celer and Atem, and I'm ok with the money, if the protection is there as well.
Well, that's a million dollar question.
First off,, it has to fit. So spend some time and try everything on. Also take a back protetcor or put one on if you plan on using one. Sit on a bike,,for at least 10-15 minutes. No bike to sit on,,go some where else. You're buying it to ride with,,,so sit and get comfortable.
All the products today are not what they were ten years ago. That is fact. So the best have come down a bit. So look for fewer panels,,and double stitching. So if you see a seam and you do not see any other stcitching lines,, that's single stitched. So double is better.
What you will get with the better stuff like Dainese is better patterns. They get the better pattern makers and leather cutters. So you see a better fit with the higher ends. Which does not mean the lessor lines won't fit you well. It kind of depends on your build.
But typically,, yes the better stuff crashes better. But again,, every crash is different. Stay away from Kanagaroo,,,or any other bling crap. Simple is better.
